I'm cooking some lamb shanks, in lamb stock, rosemary, thyme, carrots and onions in the slow cooker and wondered if I put a couple of venison shanks in how they would turn out. Anyone else done something similar?
I get a lamb box from the butcher occasionally which always has 2 shanks and I add deer shanks to do in a batch as it's not worth doing 2
So I've often done a mixed bag of shanks before. Works fine no special notes
Muntjac lamb and fallow all cook in near enough the same time that I don't bother doing anything clever about that.
There was a thread on here a month or two ago with some great shank recipes including a massive biryani which looked incredible if you are after ideas
Tried the venison shanks cooked with lamb shanks in the slow cooker for about 6hrs after browning off first, then in the oven at 220degC for 20mins. The lamb was lovely but the venison was dry, which was probably because of the finishing in the oven but they did taste like lamb which wasn't an issue as we generaly have far more venison than lamb. I should have just used the venison shanks direct from the slow cooker which I should have known.
That's what I said, browned the meat in a pan and then slow cooked. I always put the lamb back in the oven after the slow cooker and it turns out great but didn't work for the venison.
