Crash course in SSG 69’s please!

Asking for SSG69 owners out there for their opinion on this rifle?
The best group I have ever done, with any rifle, was with my P1 69 SSG.
I put up a 1" square patch at 200 at yards at East Holme range and couldn't see where the shots were going. Walked up to find all four shots were within the 1" patch, went back and put a further three shots within the same patch.
This was with a 3-9 x 40 scope that cost £12 new, more suited to an air rifle!
I should add that this was with Norma .308180gr factory ammo.

I am pretty sure that the black police models also came in 22-250 Rem, 243 Win and 308 Win for the UK. Maybe 7-08Rem in Europe??
Quite possibly, I only saw the 243 when I first saw them at the game fair.
The chap in front of me was look at the Steyr aug. He asked what discount he could expect if he ordered 10,000 !
Such things stick in your mind!

Quite optimat figures in that manual... 860m/s from 16" barrel, 1000m effective range...

(realistic range might be 800 yards or below with most contemporary bullets, since they didn't go through transsonic range with any grace i.e. might have tumbled or at least lost stability to the degree that you cannot speak of any accuracy thereafter)

Tom - I did indeed. Variation submitted. Am actually very excited at taking delivery of this rifle. I’m very tempted to mount a Kahles 624i on it as a nod to the past but bang up to date as well! I’ll look to snaffle a ZF84/69/95 when one comes along.

The more I read about these rifles the more amazed they aren’t overtly well known and talked about. They appear to make the Enforcers/L42’s look stoneage!. I’m very pleased to have found and secured one tbh.

I do also appreciate everyone’s answers on this thread as well.

I used my work rifle on a West Yorksire rifle course in 1996. The scope was a S&B PM1 3-12 with a Bryant Reticle. The sub calibre rifle was a Steyr AUG in .223. The Uk importer was A wells and Co. The Met used the SSG as well but had Sworovski 3-12 x 56 scopes which were optically better than the S & B but did not cope well with the constant adjustment of the elevation and deflection. The rifles were superseded by the AI AWM which was certainly as good. The limiting factor was the ammunition, originally Hirtenberger 168 grain but was replaced with Ruag 176 grain Ball in the PPS and Federal Trophy Bonded 165 grain where I worked .

again, small piece of history of these rifles. I have been lucky to have used an AW until recently but the modern push for heavier rifles and calibres somewhat dates the venerable 7.62mm and SSG to a time and place but I do think a lighter weight rifle able to successfully hit out at 800m is as relevant today as it was in decades gone by.

Hello all, am pondering what modern glass works well with the rifle? It’s purely for TR out to 1200 yards I expect? As a nod to the past a modern Kahles appeals but obviously a lot of cash and decent scopes appear in the for sale pages so your thoughts are really most welcome.

I mentored a first-time shooter at my club a couple of weeks ago.

After a few minutes' "show and tell", he sat behind my SSG 69 PII on the 100-yard point and put 3 GGG Imperial Match into 0.5 MOA.

Any glass will work well with it, just look at some and see which best suits your eyes. Also suppose if your using the original mounts or picatinny rail
