Crash course in SSG 69’s please!

Dearest all,

Finally got technical time with the rifle. As stated in countless articles - oh yes it’s accurate! 1/2 MOA perfectly achievable on zeroing at 100yds multiple time. Clearly made for longer distances so working up a plan to go do this when the MOD let us come and play again.

However, the mags proved a bit of a disaster: one dropped and broke into little bits for good: another decided to jam with 3 rounds in it so now resembles Alan Partridge’s trouser press on the bench.

Mag conversion now high on the ‘I didn’t know it was what I’ve always wanted.’ Call to Sporting Services on the cards today.

The joy of old rifles :)

Awesome, and yes the joy indeed, as such journeys do make the eventual arrival to ones destination so much more satisfying :)

On top of this, i bet you get a lot of admiring glanses down at the range with the ssg, right :) ? Because i suspect that for a good few males currently in their late 30ies to late 40ies the SSG69 was one of their first child hood "rifle from a movie" crushes, due to the Tom Berenger and Billy Zane movie, Sniper. - "one shot, one kill!" Damn that was a cool movie, and rifle!!:D

the best sort of trigger, and set trigger imo, (a good single set one, i mean).

@Martiniblack577 how is the rifle to handle, because it has a bit of heft to it, no?
Comparing it to an AW, I much prefer the SSG. It is lighter; less cumbersome, easier to work with. The groupings are no different to the AW either for the distances available to me. The simplicity of the rifle construction is a well thought out design. I’m obviously bias though :). However, the SSG has its place booked in the time line of sniper rifle development and deservedly so. Comparing to period correct Enfield offerings such as the L42 and Enforcer, it runs rings around them. I intend comparing all 3 in the near future so get a bit more scientific though. Main downsides are the OEM mags - but then they are very old so I’ve retired them and added the AICS conversion plus a Spuhr mount with modern glass. Now if I could just find a cased military issue SSG with all the kit……

Yep, That would be a great find indeed, i imagine :) - Maybe Tom Berenger can help you out ,)

Actually, joking aside, given movies such a Sniper, some movie studios are likely in possession of pretty good condition military weapon kits, some of which they might not really need anymore. I imagine a ssg might fall into that category. It's a outside of the box idea, i quite agree, but perhaps not an entirely foolish one. And these days, with emailing possible, what is enquiring going to cost, 20 mins on the keyboard, if that? It might be worth a shot :)

I’ve got two of these and always looking at them coming up cheap these days for a third gun just for spares
As mentioned mags and trigger housings always go I’ve had one full stock go and had to replace it and my two now are on the way out at front end of the stock and the accessories rail can be iffy too
You either love these rifles or don’t if you do you put up with idiosyncrasies and just get lots of spare mags scope mounts scopes ect ect as they come up my I’ve got 4 kahles with mounts 4 ten round mags and most of my five round mags only hold 3 now or they just spill them all out
I’m sure you will love owning one of these just be prepared to replace a few bits if needed

There is also, as others note, the look-a-like Model M "Professional" with the green plastic stock. Often seen in 7.62x63 which is .30/06 to us Anglophones.

This guy makes after market stocks for them:

Have to admit - would love to find an OEM wooden stock for the rifle.

Ahh
These are great rifles these are what got me into these older model steyrs a dear old friend had a 30/06 double sett trigger that I now own since his passing
I’ve also got the 25/06 and the 270 models to would love the full set
Most of the calibers never get into the uk in these models I’ve only ever seen a 9.3-62 stateside though

Have a later model PII, double set triggers, picatinny mount with a 1st gen 10x42 SWFA and the ubiquitous (stateside) Harris bipod. I'm no stellar shot shot but last venture out, put 3 168gr BTHP Match within 3/8" at 100yds. Picked up 4 mags, have back-up plastic bottom metal with metal screw inserts but did get one of Dr Strangelove's bottom metal units, now installed. May have to pick up one of the WR aluminum mags mentioned above, just in case. Some more double set trigger P1 love in Magnum P.I. season 8 ep 8: Watch show Magnum, P.I. 1980 on lookmovie2 for free in 1080p High Definition and Chuck Norris from 1983--Lone Wolf McQuade: Watch Lone Wolf McQuade 1983 - Free Movies
Great rifles--enjoy yours and good luck.
