Deer dog - breed choice!

Obviously there is a good selection of specific breeds of " deer dog" but has anyone got any non deer dog breeds, for finding deer. I am talking labs, spaniels, terriers etc. good? bad?

Used to have labs then GSP and now have GWP. All worked well and had their strengths. Labs easier to train in my opinion but wirey has been the most challenging but rewarding. My GSP was the most initiative and possibly multi purpose. Just my tuppence worth.

makes sense, worth noting the ease of training etc!

If you want dogs for tracking nearly anything is capable. The training is key so you are more geared for success with ground scenting dogs but as @308McTavish has identified there are versatile breeds which will do you a great job. They are just more challenging to train! My dog is great but she isn't for the fainthearted. I'd have an easier time with something else but when she is stalking in the morning and working an entire field after birds in the afternoon I wouldn't have anything else.

I had a Lab until a couple of months ago.

Outstanding mobile deer radar.

Waterproof, calm, teaches itself once the brakes are fitted.

Was half thinking about a BMH until I read the thread on here the other day. So it's another Lab if i can find a pup from a pedigree working bitch. 🫰

Interesting chat on one forum about GSPs.
One guy claimed that the Danish lines were okay, but the German ones were expected to hold a wounded 'animal'
If true, he difference in trainability would be only for the most 'experienced'.

Not true I'm afraid. in my opinion the lines from various countries are to intermixed to make statements like that.
I have found that that the further south in europe you go the more bird fixated they are as they , the breeders pick studs that are bird only dogs. Poland, Germany, Denmark etc all tend to want all-round dogs. Most GSP lines in the northern half of Europe will follow, catch and hold a deer if allowed to develop naturally. All can be trained to dead bark, or bay live. I will say that GSPs are not easy to train compared with dogs like labs

Firstly Labs have been used in stalking in the UK longer than we have had GWPs , Having had a GWP and a number of labs i would not not get another GWP over a lab ( there are good GWPs , but they vary and many disappoint ) Spaniels ( normally Springers ) make geed deer dogs . A mate of mine is a well known person on deer tracking in the uk , he mainly has Labradors in his team but really likes his springer as his lead dog , labs go likr a train on a trail but i really do concede the spanners do possibly work harder longer than the labs when the scent is very weak . Issue for me is they dont walk as good while actually out stalking .
The lab hold the world title as an assistance dog in about every aspect of this work and are just as happy hunting hard or fast asleep under the high seat or just plain sat besides you an important thing imo

My border has a superb nose will track anything but…. He can’t really be trusted off a lead not to go to ground or go self employed for small critters. I think just about any working dog can follow a fresh track but if it’s any longer than that you need a proper dog for the job.

I love the GWP on my 3 rd now , but some can be hard work, I have done a lot with terriers in the past, I would not rule out a well bred terrier if I had to give up on the GWP’s. Terriers also take up less room in the truck😊.

I’ve had a few, they’d all hold a deer if necessary and I trialled them too. Some were better than others, I generally put them on the trail immediately after the shot, they would indicate deer too, biggest challenge was getting them to stay at heel for deer stalking, they loved to get out and hunt.

My GWP has improved loads lately, but muntjac are her nemesis . Too much fun to be had with them🙄.
I would go back and reinforce stop and return and then I might just put a collar on her before I expose her to temptation again.
Fix it and its no big deal keeping it fixed, let her continue and it definitely will not fix itself.

GWP x Lab otherwise known as Perthshire pointer. Best dog I've had - very quiet stalking, follows up well, sits under a high seat. Also points deer and game and retrieves gamebirds. Only trouble is getting hold of a good one. My lab is also good deer dog though as he is a greedy bugger. He see's a shot deer as a meal ticket so wants to get there as quick as possible!
