Deer photography

Hi all,

Trying a bit of a different approach to “shooting” here, but would anyone who’s got a few decent pictures of UK deer be willing to share them and provide permission for me to use them in my DSC1 revision app?
I’d be willing to provide a free version of the app to anyone whose images are used.
The app is on both iOS and android (although Google haven’t let me publish yet).
Currently the app has a small selection of images I've personally taken on my travels and a few that have no copyright attached.

That being said, the visual ID section comes up a little short in terms of diversity and quantity.

I’m not a professional web/app developer, just a techie who recently took up stalking and found the accessibility of available material a little lacking.
I have engaged with both BASC and DMQ to make them aware of the app, its content and intended use.

I honestly didn’t think finding suitable images of deer would be the hard part, but here we are!

Thanks!

All the images I have looked with the BDS images are very clear explaining what is what also they are all quite different with only looking at the sika V red slides back many years ago.
In real life terms a male/female red calf in August in low light is very hard to tell and I have let a few pass being unsure even if the male calf was in season. Same with young fallow.
I would concentrate on the shooting/safety test tbh
But good luck

Yeah, I’ve heard a few people mention even on the actual test there’s a few images thrown in to purposely “trick” you!
The images I’ve got so far show most of the defining characteristics but I’ve definitely turned down a few that I couldn’t be certain of. I’ve had friends from America/Canada even send me some whitetails that you’d swear was a roe!
The safety assessment section I’ve put in definitely needs some work as the longest answer was usually the right one, but I’ve changed the format for the next release.

What practice are you doing for the shooting test as having a "App" won't work!
My diving instructor used to say in his lessons " you won't drown of boredom in the classroom however please pay more attention later on at the pool"

I’m out regularly stalking with a friend and using his .308 under his hawk like supervision.
We recently visited his friend who works as a game keeper for a few sites in Scotland and did a skill test with him.
He said if I shoot like I did that day, there should be no problem.
He had me using split sticks, but I’d been stalking with a tripod, so I got an air rifle to practice with.
If I’m not comfortable with getting the rifle on the stick, the rest will fall apart instead of into place.
I’m also a member of a rifle club and attend 3-4 times a month which definitely keeps everything from muzzle awareness to misfires fresh in the old noggin!
The app is only intended to cover the theory side though, so maybe I should add a disclaimer about the shooting part 😅

I thought the BDS images were awful
especially the CWD ones - e.g. is this a buck or a doe

and hopefully we can all see some obvious clues on this one and know the species but what's going on at the head, is that twigs, antlers or just image compression artefacts

it's all a bit academic as you only need 80% but when this is for a test and everyone will be second guessing themselves they should avoid ambiguous images

If you can get good at identifying deer using "ambiguous images" that will stand you in much better stead in the field at last light.

See, this is one of the problems I had with the app. The image wasn’t clear or the deer was too far away. The illustrations I was adding were often difficult to fit on to the image without obscuring the subject, so I had to make them smaller which, in turn, made the writing tiny.
I had to add in the ability to pinch zoom so that you could zoom in to further inspect the high resolution image.
Hopefully the training/assessment bodies can take a queue from my example 👀

As they say in Belfast, “dead on!” Sometimes in poor conditions you might only catch the backside of one before it hears you approaching and legs it.
That being said, you wouldn’t be taking the shot if you couldn’t identify it…strong arguments for both sides

All the most useful ID clues are at the backend anyway. Start at the bum and work your way forward. You should know what it is by the time you're level with its bellybutton.

They look just fine on the web site... take a look.
Or shoot them :tiphat: They were increasing in distance H/L 175-185-195 minus 2

Have you tried asking in "Pictures and Videos" I find this section isn't too obvious as Its in off topic then all the way at the top sort of hidden, especially in the thread Best Trail Camera photos. there's a bunch of lovely photos in here that might fit the niche (assuming there OP says yes) that are high enough quality BUT also slightly distorted enough It isn't professional camera quality and Is "easy" too tell straight away.

Cheers Sol! I wasn’t aware it was there, but I never actually checked “off topic” as I thought this would still be considered “on topic” 😅
I also didn’t want to start DM’ing people to ask as it’s a bit like cold calling and no one likes that. Especially at tea time…

I was always taught that if you aren’t sure what it is, then work out what it isn’t & then what you’re left with is the answer!

That’d be a good basis for your photos - I’m not a supporter of photos that have deliberately been distorted or enlarged from a relatively low resolution digital image of a deer taken at distance so it’s all pixelated, or which are dark, fuzzy, lack definition etc. We all know that if in doubt we don’t shoot, so any deer of unknown sex, or age, or even species, will be left alone.

Back to the OPs original question

Maybe you can ask people on this group if they will allow you to use the images
There are some excellent ones and I ran through it for my DSC1 revision
