Hi all!

Been interested in starting stalking deer for a while and I am considerring starting a course to get started, but before that (since it seems I will have to wait end of October anyway for that), I would like to get started in just watching deers during the weekend and just observe their behavior.

Where would you suggest looking, any trail to follow or location to start from ?

I am interested to do both in Fife and Angus or anywhere not too far from Abroath

Thanks

Go to your own ground you will learn a lot more about your own deer. Going out in to an area that is already stalked would give you a very bad name before you even start. But if you live in one or two of those areas then hook up with a guide who will teach you more than any course can.

I have lived down here for 2 years now. I walk the dog morning and night and have seen stalkers a grand total of twice and one of them was at 1pm after the Does allegedly. He was keen to impress me with how much land he had to stalk over but was oblivious to the need to hammer the deer here as the farmer will need to replant the windblown trees. He had the gear though 👍

I agree going off the beaten track is going to raise issues but if there's a path or a road then fill yer boots. You will find there are more zoo keepers/land acquirers than there are stalkers. It is Scotland, the place is as much yours as theirs.

Fife and Angus are hoaching with the damn things, nobody shoots enough. I came down the A90 yesterday 2pm and there were loads out and about. There are ~ 20 + this years lot in the fields behind me and a separate 14 + kids in the fields across the road. And Nature Scot is hammering the highlands deer 'cos there are too many ? What density do we have here?

Look and you shall see. Most people don't. Start with a drive aboot at the right times.

Good stalking up the Angus Glens. If I was starting out I would go stalking there

If you want to start stalking, go out and stalk a deer .
If you don’t have a suitable rifle , take a paid stalk.

Best way to learn is to take part.

I used to see plenty of Roe along the cliffs past Victoria Park, try and go when it's quiet and you 'll see them in the fields. AS @NullMac suggested, a run up into the Glens will be worthwhile and the further up the Glens you go, the greater the chance of spying some Reds as well.
PS Don't forget the other "R" in Arbroath........:D Fine bit of the country!
