Hi guys I’m currently looking for a Labrador bitch pup that I can use for my deer stalking mainly but will also want too train her in picking up etc , I see plenty on you tube about gun dog training but nothing on the deer training side of things , has anyone done any dvds or you tube training , I find videos better than books personally thanks for your help in advance guys 👍

Thanks for this, I signed up for the Blueprint. Have only watched first section of 12 or so videos so far but v good and all seems sensible. I've trained dogs before but not a deer dog so wish to hit the ground running. I think this will help.

Evening donk.
I have been training gundogs and teaching handlers how to train them for forty years. My advice is to train your Lab on game birds as normal ensuring a high level of discipline in the field prior to thinking about deer. You will find that your Lab will readily trasition on to finding deer by using deer legs from knee to hoof as retrieves. Laying trails with these encourage a young dog follow a line and as confidence grows longer time scales between laying the trail and sending your dog will get him quite proficient and confident when he has to find his first shot beast.
Labs can become very proficient deer dogs and will find with the best of them. The only fly in the ointment is that they will not sound on finding one. Some will try and retrieve them, some will pull hair out.either way on returning you will see hair around his mouth that will confirm a find.

thank you Doric that was the plan although I don’t use a shotgun I was going too train too pic up etc first as you never know I might want too go into shotguns at a later date and would be a feather in the cap pardon the pun to any dog too get that sussed so yes that sounds good and thanks for the advice on the deer legs etc 👍

Yes I agree with Doric and did it the other way round trained using the blue print idea the parts that suited me with the GWP on deer first then when I tried to get him to range out for birds he was slightly confused and overwhelmed when I took him to a small shoot with all the other dogs and shouting when previously it was only me him and the deer and we were all quiet sneaking about. I normally shoot alone ( long story and painful ) so it doesn’t affect me and he works both shotgun and rifle when we are out ourselves so happy days.

Right lads next question, does anyone know of a good dvd series from pup too adult Labrador gun dog training as a starting point as this will be all new too me also and would like too give the pup the best chance 👍
