Down the deer stalking rabbit hole…

Evening from Saffron Walden in Essex, UK.

My stalking experience is limited. An excellent one day introductory course (all theory and range based) followed in quick succession by a guided evening stalk. A muntjac buck was dispatched, brought home and skinned, butchered and enjoyed by all the family over the Easter weekend.

I’ve been shooting shotguns for almost 20 years. Mostly clays, with a few beaters days and a bit of rough shooting. Before that, it was rabbits with my grandad’s air rifle. But I have to say, my limited stalking experience has me well and truly hooked.

There is definitely a field-to-fork aspect. I (currently) have no interest in trophies. Just cull animals for personal consumption and to share with friends and family. But it’s also just spending time in the countryside (or the wilderness if I can get a little further from home) and getting away from the rat race. It’s the perfect antidote to far too many hours at a desk in London.

My cabinet currently has two shotguns in it - a 12 and a 20, both over 15 years old. But there is space for a rifle if/when I secure a FAC.

For now, it seems I’m fully down the stalking rabbit hole. Magazines. Podcasts. Forums. There is a lot to learn. Which brings me to you fine people. All advice welcome and any criticism humbly received. I’m looking forward to being part of the community.

Welcome, Rob.

Lovely place, Saffron Walden. l would imagine that there’s some enviable stalking round there (especially if you could snivel an invitation to Audley End... )

There are certainly lots of deer around (particularly on the AE estate - and I’ve heard on the grapevine they are trying to cull muntjac numbers this spring) - so I don’t think they would be hard to find - Working out how to get the permissions might be more challenging though!

Welcome, I'm just down the road from you in Haverhill. Unfortunately I'm in a similar place, no FAC (yet!) and no permissions, but always happy to network with locals, who knows, we might be able to help each other in the future! I do know there's some fine chaps who offer stalking for munties and Fallow over in Sudbury (C&K Suffolk), so not too far a drive, and a good friend of mine you'll find on here (Andrewcarter2727) regularly has paid stalking available up in the March area.

Welcome to the adventure - I'm only just getting back into it myself, after several years away. Just a thought, but don't forget that you will also need to store your centre-fire ammunition behind lock and key, which a dedicated rifle cabinet accommodates in a separate lockable top box. If you don't have one in your shotgun safe, you will need to consider buying another box and securing it appropriately.

Thanks Jon and good point. I’ll add it to the list of future expenditure (which I may be keeping hidden from my other half!).

All things that occupy the footwell of your car cost twenty quid. This includes scopes, ammo safes, takedown rifles, and binos

Full marks to the Op for his mixed metaphor post! He is clearly on the right-track for both deerstalking in the UK and - more pertinently - Stalking Directory engagement!

Welcome Rob, from just down the road in Stansted. I'd recommend doing your DSC. Saffron Walden is Essex Police and they were keen for a DSC for FAC application. Plus, it's a great way to build knowledge
