Elk hunting in Colorado

Sometimes I am jealous of what the Americans have got, IE lots of public land they can get tags on and hunt. Watching this video makes this hunt looks fantastic and I would love to get the opportunity to do this.

However i would imagine they only get a tag for 1 bull elk per year? Whereas us in the UK have no bag limit to speak of.

uk system is ok, and it certainly beats tag system, just read the finland moose thread, it now transpires that unless your very well connected you can forget it. IMHO save your pennies for Africa.

True, but you can get other tags, and then you could go over the state border and get another tag!
Don't just think about it, do it!
Just my opinion, as i did a hunt in South Africa and Montana all i can say is give me the rockies any day of the week.
Cheers

I bowhunted Elk in the Rocky Mountains back in 2009 on public land.I think the tag cost $500 dollars and i was surprised at the amount of Elk and Mule deer we saw. We camped at 8,000 ft and went up to about 10,000ft when above the tree line. No atvs or vehicles were allowed off the tracks so any Elk shot needed to be packed out in back packs. The air is thin at that altitude and it takes a couple of days to adjust. I have a preference point for Elk at the moment and will be applying for another preference point this year. I will then apply for an Elk tag to hunt unit 40 in 2015 which has been recommended by a friend who lives out there. What i saw of the tag system i thought it worked well and everyone had a chance of getting tags for some of the exspensive big game animals not just the rich who could afford to pay big dollars for them hunts.Every State has its own rules and regulations so its best to have a read up before you go.

Like Gary, I bow hunted elk in the Colorado Rockies, in 2011.
The licence cost me $500 for a bull or cow elk,
best two weeks hunting I ever had...No I didnt get a shot,
but the freedom of hunting in the high backcountry was something,
not to be forgotten. and no rifle hunters....

UK has lots of opportunities to get a deer, usually for a cost
in one way or another, but excellent success rates

Agreed the rockies are truly epic
