Hi, new to the stalking directory. I live on dartmoor and pretty new to stalking. I have had my .243 for quite a few years but never really got into stalking properly. I have now completed my DSC1 which has given me a lot more confidence and I will hopefully get into it a lot more. Still waiting to get my first deer since the course as I want to get a chiller sorted before hand so that I can do it properly.
It will be roe that I am after but would love to have a go at muntjac if there is anyone out there who has some muntjac stalking available.

Welcome to the site Edlamb, look up muntjac stalker on the site if your after shooting a muntjac

I have heard that they are near, local farmer on which I have permission has said that he thought he has seen one but haven't had time to investigate yet.

Where did you see one?

Dont want to query your recognition skills Richard but are you sure it was Muntjac? I visit this area regularly and have not seen or sign of one anywhere. That's not to say they are not here though!

Pete
The farmer told me one had been seen, i checked the area and found slots, i have shot a Muntjac so i do know what one looks like, it was also seen by a guy i had out with me, but as i say i haven't seen it since.
How about reds, have you seen any near Manaton?
I saw a huge stag there 2 years ago but nothing since.
Cheers

Will keep an eye out for Muntjac!

Regarding Reds, yes there are Stags close to Manaton, they tend to be transient though throughout the winter. I saw 3 big stags in body weight and heads last winter, nearby. A farmer shoots them on his fields if he sees them so doubt they last very long if spotted.
I don't shoot them as would be nice for population to increase a bit, however, I have not seen a Hind in the area or come to think of it on South Dartmoor so not sure population will increase anytime soon.

The fallow population is still increasing though and spreading west across the moor, even though there being poached left, right and centre!

Sorry for hijacking original post EdLamb.

Welcome to the site. Lovely area you live in. I have great memories of living in Holne next to the pub when at Ag college :D

No worries discopete, I'm finding it very interesting.

The muntjac I've heard of was near buckland-in-the-moor but I have also heard reports of them down around stover and Trago but how true this all is I don't know. I know they are an alien species but I would quite like them to become established!

I have only seen a pair of red hinds in all the years I have lived here near bellever but I'm always hearing reports especially of stags which are passing through. But I seem to be cursed as I never see them! I've heard of them near manaton and I think I know the farmer that you referred to.

Only seen fallow in the teign valley but apparently there was one on a local farm a few years ago, it was by itself and hanged out with the sheep!

I really getting itchy feet to get out now, gonna have to try and find some decent stalking now.

Where are you from discopete?

Sika, thats a new to me! There were are couple of muntjac in fernworthy quite a few years back but the forestry got rid of them pretty quickly.

I live in Ashburton area. I haven't seen any Muntjac around the moor neither has any people I know but that's not to say their not there, just a matter of time I would have thought.

Reds also pass through Buckland and it's surrounding woods, it's quite extensive and doesn't get stalked so there will probably be a resident population of stags.

There is Fallow spreading onto the moor, there is a small population at manaton and around Bovey Castle area, not sure how much further west they will spread from there though. You did have a good amount of Fallow right in the centre of Widecome and Pere David, not sure of their fate now though.

Hi Ed.
I met you and Mark on your DSC1 shooting test a few weeks back. Welcome to the site.
Like DDS said I also know of 2 Munties seen in Trusham 2 years ago by a good mate and experienced stalker. Saw them on one evening and never seen them since so they're comming.
