Expensive Coat Vs Waterproof Outer Layer

Over the years, and lots of the expensive jackets, I have found that on many days being 100% waterproof isn't necessary and it is much better to wear something that will cope with a few showers but that is more breathable as that way I stay drier and warmer. I spend a lot of days in the year out and about in some of the wilder and more remote parts of the UK.

In my case I ended up going to the British Army Windproof Smocks - I wear a DPM one for fishing and walking and a newer MTP one for stalking. The MTP ones have fleece handwarmer pockets, pit zips and all that sort of stuff that you'd expect in a fancy jacket plus they have well designed pockets that nothing can drop out of. The smocks aren't waterproof (and have a full length front zip unlike some smocks) but they will easily cope with even a heavy shower especially if you use some spray on or wash in waterproofing. On the vast majority of days the smock is all you need. However, on a very wet day then you can put a waterproof layer under the smock - this means that you keep all your pockets and the smock keeps the waterproof layer quiet plus the waterproof layer doesn't need to be very robust as it is protected by the smock. You can pick your waterproof layer as suits you - some days I use a very lightweight and cheap "Pack-it" jacket and on other occasions I've used my lightweight Musto Munro jacket (they no longer make them) as it doesn't add much bulk but is a bit warmer, there are also lots of waterproof mil surplus jackets if you wish. Clearly putting the waterproof layer under the smock sounds a bit weird, and I resisted trying it for a long time, but it does work well. The smock dries very quickly indeed and so if the rain stops then in a few minutes you can remove the waterproof layer and go back to being much more comfortable and breathable.

You can get the windproof smocks for every little cash from various mil surplus outlets and you probably already have something suitable to use as a waterproof layer under it so you can give this system a try at almost no cost. If it doesn't work for you then put the smock back on ebay and you'll get your money back.

I have had a rivers west eider jacket for wildfowling... waterproof, but gets heavy with the rain and is NOT breathable so hot and sweaty for walking
Don't be too put off, my RW smock is I find for me great, you just don't need too much layers on beneath it if active!

Very well designed, if I could change anything, I'd add zip open underarms, otherwise I think they're excellent, and not too dark a colour either.

I like the neatness of a smock but I prefer a coat or jacket because you can open them up when walking to get some air.

I've never managed to find a waterproof outfit, they all leak if I'm out in the rain for long enough. I keep a spare outfit in the car and change if necessary . If the spare gets wet I have a dry shirt socks and jocks along for the drive home.
Everything fits in a small bag, if you get smart comments from your wet mates suggesting you're running away from home, just tell them its your bug out bag.

Have u tried wearing base layer stuff?
Even when it jackets leak ur never feel that cold or miserable as they wick moisture away from u.
The same if u stop after a hard slog, with base layer u never get cold the same.
Before I discovered base layer stuff and cutting/climbing night shfts on railways I used to wear normal cotton t shirts and rugby tops, I always took a change of clothing and plenty off jackets for break time. Some winters nights u could feel the sweat freezing on ur back.
I really rate it even thou I just buy the cheap stuff

Yeah , I have merino base layer but it gets wet if I'm out long enough, I really just don't like sitting in damp clothes even if they're warm.
Then my Mrs says I smell funny when I get home and makes me have a shower, then she sticks all my hunting gear into the washing machine at 60 degrees and full spin with smelly fabric conditioner, it can take nearly a month to get everything back to the right state of funk.
The big advantage of bringing along a change or two is everything eventually gets to the same funky state and my Mrs tends to shy away from any job bigger than a single load.
There's no point in getting older if you don't get crafty with it.
