Fallow pelt

I have a lovely common fallow skin that I would like to get professionally pelted. I’ve tried to do pelts myself before and they’re always just a bit naff.

Any recommendations? I am near Farnborough…

I send mine to the Welsh Organic Tannery. Its not cheap, mind you.
I'm expecting 8 back from them tomorrow.

Make sure you salt it well ASAP after getting it off the carcass.

I’m interested in getting some hides tanned, Welsh tannery looks the best bet…. My question is, do you have to flesh the hide before salting it? I’ve seen many places you have to spend hours scraping skins before you can salt it….. is this the case? Regards

If you've done a tidy job skinning the deer then there'll be very little additional cleaning up to do. Maybe 10 minutes at most, getting any fatty bits off.

Thankyou. I guess you have sent several to them? They do a good job?

Yes, they've done quite a few for me. Very tidy, but they can only do their best with what you send them. Reasons for failure are largely down to how well the skin has been prepped prior to them receiving it.
It's not cheap by any means, and there's a disposal charge for failed skins, so it's not worth sending skins unless you're 100% confident that they're good ones.
They're also rushed off their feet with work, so it'll be a long wait to get your skins back.

7 month lead time now…
I’ve just sent one off. Tried my best to clean it up so fingers crossed!!

This is the state that I sent mine in… I’ll let you know if it was successful in April!!

Having emailed them their advice was:
“double check there is no hair slippage before you post it - this can be done by taking a pinch of hair and tugging and also just sliding your hand over the hair - if it comes away it is not suitable for tanning but if it is all intact it is good to go!”
