First crayfish trapping of the year

First outing this year on the signals, the traps were in for 24hrs and as usual my daughter was with me, what was great was thay my Mrs decided she wanted to come to bring my son out as well (he's 1yr old)

What a great first outing for them, 42 out the river, last year the most I had at one go was 22 I believe. And the size of some of these. The hot weather and enough rain to keep the river full has definitely helped them. Because of the amount the traps are set again to try and get some more before they damage anything

I have managed to convince a friend who is an outstanding chef that receiving them from me is a hugely generous gift.

He then prepares them and invites us for dinner.

Love the meat! I was once shown a neat trick to clean them. Just before they go in the pot, twist the centre ray of the tail 45 degrees clockwise, them anticlockwise. The entire digestive tract can then be withdrawn

Yeah that's how I do it as well, it's a little more tricky on the smaller ones but still good to do and if you accidentally break the fin off your can still get the tract with the tip of a knife

Yeah a clean in some fresh water, kill and remove the tract using the middle fin approach and boil and you good to go

Fish like to eat them too, the tail meat is like candy to a steelhead. Baby live ones are irresistible to trout as well.
