First FAC in Scotland – .270 vs .308 vs 6.5×55 vs something else as all‑round stalking calibre?

I shoot 25-06, 243, 6 PPC, 270, 7mm08, 308, 260 Remington, 6,5 Creedmore, 7mm Remington Magnum, 6,5 Grendel...
All are OK
I comme back this year with 7mm08 with 130 gr Fox Bullet very effective on sika stag
Perhaps 308 is better for shooting heavy bullet...

The fox point is well taken – most of my foxing initially is likely to be ad‑hoc with a guide rather than high‑volume lamping, so I was hoping to get away with “living with” whichever deer calibre I choose rather than needing a dedicated fox rifle straight away.

Out of interest, with the .243 route with fast‑twist barrels and copper, do you feel it still has enough margin on reds?
Works for me mate.

The 243 has laid literally hundreds of thousands of deer to rest in Scotland over decades.

Is it ideal?
No

The 270 is better for reds but will decimate roe when chest shooting.

OP

you dont need a fast twist .243 - 80gr minimum in Scotland and greater muzzle and downrange energy from 80gr copper or lead with any barrel length
choice or 58gr foxing ammo which is also works extremely well on small ( and some large) deer

6.5 CM - 95gr Factory VMax is a devatstating fox round, also works very well on deer (see a pattern forming here?..) lots of non lead option from 100-130gr
308 - 110gr VMax factory Federal is devastating fox round, also works ver.......you get the point
loads of factory lead and non lead everywhere
270 - 110gr VMax Factory load (not as available as it was..) is a devasta......oh come on! keep up....
25-06 - see above.....
30-06 - see above
7x57 - see above

Largely doesnt matter
Whatever rifle you buy in whatever cartridge you choose will have infinitely more accuracy potential than you are likely to demostrate
All will do what they should if you do your bit
.243 has been the experienced stalker's choice for highland red for decades
All of a sudden its not enough gun.....

Its still the most popular cartridge sold here for a reason
you can always get better and grow into something else
Very hard to get away from the flinch you develop if you step straight into a larger cartridge and associated recoil without the practice/training or experiece
