First sport my wife and I can enjoy together.

Hi Everyone

Been Clay Pigeon since 2022 having started at a local club on weekends with my wife and I enjoying the sport from the very beginning.

The club owner then suggested we might enjoy coming alone to the local gun club that he helped run.

So this was back in 2023, initially attended the club for 6 months as probationers. Now that we had caught this bug we joined the club and applied for our FACs. After what felt like an eternity we finally were granted our FACs.

A couple of years on now from when we started my wife and I are now shooting anywhere between once and three times a week to include full bore at Bisley every few months.

I am the better of the two of us shooting shotguns but my wife is easily my better when shooting rimfire and centre fire. My preference for full bore is currently .308 and hers .223.

We shoot mainly in Berkshire but venture further a field for full bore (Bisley) - Short Siberia and clay Long Siberia as well as into Wiltshire - Barbury Shooting School.

My wife prefers 20 gauge calibre for clay mainly favouring Semi Autos, having a 12 & 20 bore Beretta, myself 12 bore with a Browning Ultra XS.

We shoot Gallery rifle/pistol at a local gun club with practice on a Tuesday and competitively on a Friday.

I favour .357/.38 SPL with a Marlin Underlever as well as .22LR with a Kidd (Ruger) 10/22 and my wife a Volquarsen barrelled Ruger 10/22.

Always on the lookout for new shooting grounds so we can venture away further afield overnight to escape the rat race that is Berkshire.

Hello, Have you tried the Clay Shoot Off the A34 around Compton Harwell or Brize Norton
Hi, no haven’t tried either, just looked up Brize Norton and was very close to there on Friday picking up new FACs and the Compton Harrell is within reach, is there a name for the shoot I can look up online, appreciate the ideas.

Excellent. Many people class clay shooting and rifles on ranges as merely practice for stalking or birds. But there's an awful lot of people that don't go near any sort of live targets. Long may you enjoy it and it's brilliant that your wife enjoys it too.

If you fancy a longer break for a few days, have a look here. Located a few miles north of Gretna, just over the border into Scotland you could stay in one of their chalets, do a round of clays morning or afternoon, eat in their restaurant and even have a jaunt around the Lake District. It's obviously a bit of a trek distance-wise, hence suggesting a mini break. But be warned, there's a well stocked modern gun room there too.

Hello, Called The 4 Counties Clay Club, near Leckhampstead off the A 34 Chieveley Turn RG 20 7 EX , Hangmans Stone Lane, Phone 07909864027

Hello, that sounds brilliant that you both share the same interest. I tried to get my wife interested in shooting but had no luck, apart from her asking me why we have no venison and when will I be going out stalking again, so not all bad I suppose!

I am happy, moving on from the humour earlier, that my wife having grown up in Benin City in Nigeria in an environment of seeing guns daily at close proximity (mostly AK47 in the hands of police, military or the SSA as in State Security Agency) sees them as no different to how she would have an opinion on a lampstand or other domestic item in the house.

Looks nice, we know parts of that area from spending time in that general area years ago so will have to give it a go sometime.

welcome.
Flightline sporting is another clay shoot very close to you, just near M4/A404 Maidenhead jct.

sporting clays in a woodland setting.
Family run and quite an informal clay shoot :)

I’m sure we went to Flightline once years ago before got our SGCs and had completely forgotten about it, thanks for the reminder must try it again sometime.

We are spoilt when travelling to Long Siberia at Bisley and further afield to Barbury Shooting School so will make a nice change to try Flightline again.
