First staking rifle 25 06 ?

That will cause a healthy debate!!!:D I was told by Callum Ferguson who I think knows his stuff, that they really benefit from longer than 24'' barrels to get the best out of slow burning powder like H4831SC which is what I used in mine and it was 26''. However I have read a few on here saying they still get good MV out barrels considerably shorter...

I have a 22" barrel, - it is true with a .25-06 velocity is King, so a 24" barrel is probably best.
But, using the 110gn Accubond I run at approx. MV 3200fps with IMR4831 & Sierra 100gn at MV 3300fps using IMR4350. Both bullets are more than adequate for everything. So, I don't feel deprived by not having the additional 2" on my barrel.
I'd certainly agree Callum Ferguson knows his stuff, however I take a different view on the practicality of having a barrel longer than 24" in the field & for me, a 22" is just fine. ATB

Yep, your right. Would another 60fps or so make a difference at already zippy speads? Probably not...

My Tikka 695 has a 22" barrell which Is perfect for my needs. I wouldnt want a longer barrell in the field.

Go for It if I could only have one rifle the 25-06 would be my choice. Good for anything in the UK

Thank you for the replies! Any thoughts on make and model and barrel length?

Lets see I had ;

Remington 700 Stainless Fluted Sendero 25-06 that was a veritable tack driver with 87 grain Sierra's but a bit heavy

Remington 700BDL Stainless Synthetic with a detachable magazine , that one nade a relatively good tree stand gun

Sako Hunter 25-06 was a good treestand and carry gun

Browning B-78 singleshot was also a very good shooter and an okay rifle to carry

I have a ,

Ruger #1B for myself that shoots plenty well enough for anything I'll do

Ranger Arms LH 25-06 bolt action for my wife that shoots better then my Ruger #1B

mine was ! had a tikka all the bells on with a robertson stock, wished i'v never sold it to kent wool growers

117gr run a dream with h4831sc

The first deer rifle I used was an estate rifle Sako in 25-06. Deadly on hinds and easy to shoot. It is a longer range rifle and very fast and if most of your shooting would be Roe deer and sub 80yds you will need to be careful on your bullet selection otherwise you might get quite a bit of damage.

Yes! But not according to DEFRA who suggest a minimum calibre of .270. (25.06 is actually a .257 bullet)

I've seen quite a few wild hogs in Arkansas killed with an AR-15 in 5.56 loaded with 55 grain FMJ's !

Granted each one was shot 2 or 3 times .

Agree but we over here have to be so Pc" As not to offend some out of touch stiff !
