First stalking rifle?

Hi all,

As the title suggests, I have just been granted my first FAC and am now in the market for my first stalking rifle.

I don’t have a huge budget and I have been looking at a Mauser 12 or a Haenel Jaeger 10 varmint sporter.

Just wanting to know people thoughts/preference?

Obviously both will do the job.

Thanks.

No experience of the Haenel, inhave owned an M12 very good rifles.

What calibre are you looking at ? Don’t discount a used rifle lots on here.

I have a Mauser M12 Impact in .308 - cannot fault it in anyway, very reliable, accurate and drops them well. Was thumbnailing at 100m with factory ammo.

There is a used Sauer 100 on here which is advertised as new. I don’t doubt that it is with mod and scope rings a good deal for a decent rifle.

A mate just bought an M12 in 6.5 CM shoots well. Lots of options available.

I had a Mauser M12 impact. Had being the operative verb.
Lovely rifle in the hand but. The fore end was so poorly fitted that after several shots the warming barrel touched it. The fore end was flexible beyond belief, when using a bipod the slightest movement off centre resulted in barrel/fore end contact.
Unable to obtain any degree of precision, returned as absolute rubbish.
Might have been a Friday afternoon Monday morning job.

Replaces with an Anschutz 1782, pure nectar.

Excellent deals to be had on Mauser m18 rifles in .308! Overstocked in dealers in the U.K., you can pick up a new one for not much over £600 leaving you room for good mounts and a good GLASS scope.

I had Haenal in 308, well made accurate rifle.

Only reason I changed was because I merely fancied a change... the elure of a new toy and all that.

I think Rab or Solway Firth Firearms may still have it on the shelf 🤔 he's a good chap to deal with and would RFD it I'm sure.

I've no direct experience with both options you quote above, but when in your shoes I went and got second hand. If you know what you're looking at, there are often far better options on the second hand market than buying new. Many older rifles were built to quality rather than price. Ignore those who say that old rifles won't shoot either. I've a few in the cabinet that beg to differ.

It's important to go to a few good stores and handle a variety of different makes and models to work out what you like and fits you. From a few minutes on GT I found these which if looking for a .308 would all be contenders. The EAW mounts on two of them are worth £400-500!

I was always told buy the best quality glass and mounts you can, then spend the rest on the rifle.

Anyway, the chances are you'll swap them after a few years - we all do 😅

I have a Mauser m12 impact in .243 and i cant fault it at all, not an expensive rifle and good quality

I have a mauser m12 extreme. It’s been brilliant. Owned it for 10 years. Testament to Mauser customer service they are redoing my stock (it was starting to get sticky). Free of charge
