I believe it to be referred to as "The Gentlemen's Calibre" and it got instant traction as a benchrest round back in the 60' & 70's. From my point of view I am a tad recoil sensitive and anything above .243 puts me off although lately I've been shooting a friends moderated .308 which is, shall we say, bearable but I'm persevering nevertheless.
So, .222, my go to cartridge, calibre and rifle which I can shoot for hours on end with a simple 2-7x32 or 3-9x40, never lose the sight picture and be rewarded with very good sub, bordering on half at times, moa.
