Flying to NZ with a firearm and layovers

Hi all

Have a bit of a head scratcher and I can’t get through to the airline to ask.

So

I’m flying from the UK to NZ with a rifle, I will have the required visitor permit for NZ so that’s sorted.

My concern is a have a “Technical Stop” in Singapore and then will be on the same plane to Aus. Once I’m in Aus I’ll be laying over and changing planes for the flight to NZ.

This is a single ticket flight with the same airline so my working hypothesis is I don’t require any paperwork for Singapore or Aus as I won’t have access to the rifle until I get to NZ as the baggage is transferred by the airline not myself.

Anybody done this route or similar recently and know any different?

Thanks

You are Phucked.

Unless its a hot transit, you will need import permits for both countries. My advice is to fly through Dubai or the UAE.

I know of people who have lost their guns and been detained In Aus because their guns were off loaded from SA to Jetstar for the final NZ league.

You may well be on three different planes with three different carriers what they say and what will transpire are two different things.

I have flown to and from NZ with guns numerous times and I avoid.

Singapore
England
Holland
Hong Kong
Australia
China

Finally got an answer from Quanta’s

They’re saying no paperwork required for SG or AUS as it’s a single ticket on Quantas planes, passengers and bagge stay on the plane in SG and I won’t have access to my bagged in Aus and will be airside during the layover.

Hopefully it all goes to plan

Wish me luck folks

Hopefully it all goes to plan for you.

Is it worth taking the chance either way?

Might be worth considering if you're moving permanently.

Otherwise for me it just seems more hassle than it's worth, with so much that can go wrong in transit from lost baggage, damage, permits etc

Fingers crossed and good luck!

I'm flying to NZ too. Was considering taking my rifle as there are loads of deer where my son works. We are booked through Singapore airlines with a four hour stop in Singapore airport. Anyone done this before ?

Im sure I read somewhere that you need some paperwork and have to pay a fee for the Singapore police to babysit the firearm whilst you wait.

I’d give Singapore airlines a call/email and ask them directly.

Can take up to 4 months for NZ to issue you a visitors firearms permit, but the last person I spoke to got his in 3 weeks.

Ok thanks.
I will leave it this time and maybe go again end of March when the roar starts.

I take it u cant just get a Temp Nz firearm pass at the airpirt any longer?

Been a wee while since i was last their, ( 10 or 15yrs? ) never took my rifle as too much hassle/unknowns.
But im sure i went to a police station at the airport and just showed my Uk Fac and passport.
Got it their and then, dead simple.

But possibly it has changed in the time since.

Could still be the case to be fair

I just went down the online application route for peace of mind.

Its changed.

You cant buy a gun on a visitor license anymore and the application wait is up to 6 months. But if you know some who got it in 3 weeks then it must vary alot.

You also need a sponsor who has their licence so you have somewhere to keep it.

I believe on the DOC website it mentions a 4 month wait. I spoke with a local gunshop and they regularly look after rifles for visitors and were happy to be a sponsor.

Thats a shame.

Was real easy..
I intended to borrow a matrs gun to hunt Thar but still too much snow when i was there.
So never really needed the visitor permit.
