Getting smell out of a jacket

Hi,

I've bought a brand new (but old model) DeerHunter Ram 2g jacket which has been in storage for a very long time. It subsequently has a very strong smell to it which I can't seem to get rid of. I washed it once with Nikwax Tech Wash, and then again with our usual Fairy washing powder (no softener) and it still stinks! Is there anything else I can use to wash it that won't damage the Deertex waterproof membrane?

Cheers

Is that the smell that is a weird combination of dog sweat, musty cupboard and wet tweed? If so, I’ve yet to find anything that that will remove it. It can be somewhat overpowered by use of mothballs, but that is frankly the lesser of two evils.

The general recommendation is to wash mildewy clothes and replace the detergent with white vinegar, borax or baking soda, but I’m not sure what effect those might have on the Deertex membrane.

Alternatively Bosch do an electric gizmo to remove style smell from clothes….but it costs £250!

Yeah I smells like musty cupboard and almost a chemical kind of smell. It's very strong though - enough to fill the room with the smell! So for now I'm going to have to hang it in my shed or somewhere else out of the house! I did find something called Odour Remover by Dr. Beckmann. No idea if it's safe with the membrane or not though.

Maybe a bit left field and in no way am I saying this works just throwing it in the mix, maybe a small spray of aniseed oil on the garment might mask the stuffy smell and is no repeller of Deer as such, just a thought ?

An old jacket went like that. Smell you coming anyway so couldnt use it, washed in Wilco/Tesco disinfectant. Egg cup full in tbe washing machine, paused tbe cycle to soak half hour then let it spin out.
Did it twice & reproofed with Nikwax wash in proofer.
Drying swiftly after wash is key 👍 or a soaked stalk

Sounds crazy but try (proper) vodka. Helped to get the musty smell out of an old jumper I bought recently.

I just got a spray bottle and gave it a good spray all over then let it hang. Repeated that twice and it’s much better now.

I've found some stuff on Amazon called Ecozone sports wash which is safe for use on goretex products (which should be similar enough to Deerhunters equivalent). I'm going to give that a go, and if that fails will try hanging it outside for ages and maybe a spray of vodka as I remember being told about that before.

Thanks for all the replies guys!
