Gralloching and Carcass Inspection Session, 10th November 2024, 9am - 4pm, Buckfastleigh, £55 per person

Open to non-BDS members also, a great opportunity to brush up on your gralloching and inspection knowledge with Hugh Bourne and Jessie Watson-Brown. This session will be a chance for you to get tips and ask questions while Hugh demonstrates how to gralloch a deer and discusses what to look for during the inspection. If you’ve ever felt unsure how to locate the various lymph nodes or how to identify signs of disease, or if you are considering signing up for the DSC2 and need a refresher then this session will be well worthwhile.
There may be opportunities for some of the group to get ‘hands on’ experience during the session. If time allows Hugh will incorporate some basic butchery elements with a chilled carcass after the gralloch and inspection session. Jessie is an expert tanner working with deer skin. She makes useful items from hooves, sinew and other parts of the deer which are usually discarded. As well as co-facilitating the day with Hugh she will talk about her work and explain how the 'waste' from deer processing can be utilised today as it has been for millennia.
We will have time to enjoy a ‘Hunters Brunch’ at Hugh’s cabin during the day.
When we have arranged these events previously places have booked up fast. Availability on both of these events will be limited so please book without delay if you would like to secure a place.
To reserve a place please contact southwestengland@bds.org.uk
