looking to buy my first thermal for deer and maybe fox/rabbit, a large well know website has these on 'special' and I have no idea what I'm looking at with all the numbers.

the offical title is 'Guide TrackIR 50mm 400x300 17um 50mk WIFI Thermal Imager Monocular' and I guess its the bit in the middle I just dont know 400x300 17um 50mk

anyone got one, what do you think, would this be suitable for close range ( 200m tops ) dawn and dusk deer.

many thanks in advance,

For the money the company I believe you are referring to are selling them off at the moment definitely worth it.

Two of my good friends use them. Both use them heavily for foxing and stalking. I borrowed one when my thermal went in for a repair and at normal stalking and foxing ranges they'll be hard to beat for the money.

I have the 35mm model and find it very useful, if the animal is moving I can easily tell the difference between a fox and a hare well past 200yds. However, once it starts to rain it’s pretty useless.
If I were buying one today I would be spending a bit more money and going with one with 35mK or less as even though it picks out animals with ease, the background detail is sometimes lost which then makes it difficult to get the NV looking in the right place.

Edit:
That said, having just looked at OPW they are back on at £795, an absolute steal as I paid not far off double for mine.

Word of caution, it has been mentioned on this site that the units from OPW are grey imports and although they come with some sort of warranty from OPW, Thomas Jacks, the UK importers won’t touch them.

When I looked recently and dependant upon supplier, one had 1 years warranty and another had I think 2 years.

I have the 25mm Guied that I use for my Deer and fox , owned for approximately 2 years with no complaints. I am looking to upgrade so if the 25mm is anything to go on , the 50mm must de a cracking tool 👍🏻

Guide offer a free extended warranty when your register your product with them, doesn't include internal battery though.

To the OP, I've had the TrackIR 50 since March 2021, never had any problems with it, it's a good piece of kit and I paid around £1200 more for it than the current offer..

Bite their arm off, you'll not get a better deal than that.
When these first came onto the market they were the thick end of £2k
I had one on test and it was so good a shooting buddy bought it from the company who loaned it to me
Maybe a wee bit big and bulky, but a good image and well made - and, as has been said, no lag on the wifi
If you ever wanted to build a roof mounted spotter, this thermal would be a great choice
If there is an opportunity to extend the warranty by registering with the manufacturer then definitely take it

Cheers

You can spot Roe couched in hedge bottoms a lot further than that depending on atmospherics, not identify them clearly, but you can certainly see them.
I can count the black/white blobs that are sheep in a field on the opposite wold a mile or so away, last night I could clearly see two foxes at 750yds+ on open fields. not absolutely enough to identify them, but the gait, movement and general impression told me they were foxes.

Thomas Jacks will not touch them, if they did not initially come from there official distribution chain. As a matter of fact they have binned Guide Sensmart now and no longer deal as a UK distributor for them. Guide now no longer have any offical UK distribution network..

The models mentioned above were bought in externally, not through a Guide UK distributor network and are a discontinued model, with 1 year warranty on actual product and 6 month warranty on internal battery, hence the heavy discount..

You can sort out any charging port issues before that happen by using magnetic USB connectors and cables
Put the adaptor into the charging port on the Guide then the USB charging cable attaches to the adaptor magnetically
Since the adaptor stays in the charging port, it cannot be damaged by repeated plugging and unplugging of a standard USB cable
