Gun cabinets - how many guns?

Sooo I got a phone call today from my FEO who wants to come and inspect my security (he obviously doesn’t know Brunhilde lady FB).
The thing is I have a gun-safe with a sponge fitting for three long guns but I actually have 4 in the safe - anyone ever encountered any issues with this when their FEO came a-calling and if so how did they respond?
Thanks chaps.

Legally - there is no requirement for a cabinet of any capacity.

Reality - your FEO may:-

  • Not like it.
  • Not care.
  • Not notice.

Just checked mine. Eight shotguns in a 'seven' gun cabinet.

You can put in as many as you can, provided that you can shut the door. I was "topping and tailing" mine at one time, and when I had an inspection I said I hoped he wasn't going to ask me to get them all out to read serial numbers because it would take me ages to fit them all back in again. He said yes he was, then took a look at the Chinese puzzle in the cabinet and said, on 2nd thoughts perhaps we won't bother!

It can get a bit snug, especially with NV scopes and wide fore ends, I have a 9 rifle cabinet which only fits 7 of my rifles. As VSS says, as long as the door closes and locks then your firearms are secure

Thank you S - seems to be very much down to the individual FEO‘s interpretation of “guidance” which can always be a minefield!
Still, I have plenty of experience successfully challenging “policy” so we shall see….

According to the blessed lady FB that sounds more like my gunroom - not that she has ever been in it!

like others I have played gun cab Tetris before, going over the manufacture stated capacity. No feo issues with that.

However, my feo has the last 2 times he visited wanted to know how many guns I could at a maximum hold in my cabinet, so he knows if in the future I am reaching my self declared capacity.

I think the risk here , as he sees it, is that if I buy an extra gun then I may no longer bother to play Tetris and get lazy and leave one out if it isn’t easy or practical to fit in the cabinet. Luckily I now sourced a 14 gun cabinet with no intention of filling it up, so plenty of room.

Curious as to what's tied around each gun?

True story.

It is the details of each gun.

Make, model, serial number, when bought, and what I actually paid, not what I have told my wife I paid.

I have done the same for all my rifles - so when I am dead (and thereby safe from her wrath), she knows the real 'value' of each firearm.

If your reading this Mrs.S62, it means I am dead and..."Your welcome"😇

I doubt the FEO will bother much. Security will be the thing. So long as they all fit in there and he doesn't think there's a chance you'll be tempted to leave one out, all will likely be good. But, space allowing, were I you, I'd have another cabinet, save knocking them together and a bit of capacity for expansion if you want.

Hmmm. With your background S1962 you should know that leaving the scene of the crime is an offence - punishable by ……

I have a son who would sort out my guns. My memory would remain unsullied. Although I'd obviously be past caring.
