Moving on from N160. Rifle is a Tikka T3X SS with a 22" barrel and Leupold Vx-3i 3.5x10 scope.

11 rounds starting at 42.5gr and .2gr increment. Norma 1x fired case full length resized, CCI LR primers and Hornady 140gr SST. CBTO is 2.500. Here are the MagnetoSpeed Sporter chrono data:

LoadSpeed
42.52527
42.72580
42.92606
43.12624
43.32633
43.52641
43.72639
43.92667
44.12661
44.32686
44.52700

A lot more velocity than with N160. Was diligent in checking casings after each firing. No pressure signs at 44.5gr but I will not be going any higher. Note: Speer Max is 40gr, Lyman is 42gr and Hodgdon is 44gr.

Will be loading up 3 rounds each at 43.2/43.3/43.4 and 43.9/44.0/44.1 and 44.5

Comments and suggestions are always welcome.

Thanks !

I would personally want to see three round velocity data for each charge
Based on the previous thread I am not convinced the data is accurate enough to solely draw a conclusion from.

That aside the increase from one charge to the next is indicating some flat spots.
Personally I would bracket the one that stand out.

43 (43.1) 43.2

At 43.1 you got 18fps more than 42,9
The next increase was only 9fps at 43.3
Of the two which one do you conclude is more efficient?
If by increasing powder you don’t get corresponding jump in velocity then it’s a flat spot but I want the load to be at the point it become inefficient not in the middle of a charge range that is.

Same with 43.8 (43.9) 44

I would want to see very clear incremental FPS rise per 0.2 gr powder
In cartridges I have laddered like this it is often a fixed unit 12-18fps until it tails off at a point

However relevant you may think a small rise in FPS is I always shoot three to cross reference group size.
I n a hunting rifle would take a 1/2” group with an ES of 25fps over a small ES and a 1-1.5” group
You are not testing the external BC of this bullet at ranges where ES become relevant

Edinburgh,

Thank you for your comments I am going to follow your advice and load 3 rounds for each of the weight you have indicated. Stay tune, I will post results if I can get to the range next weekend.

Like I said elsewhere. H4350 is a favourite of mine. Very forgiving, lights up easy and keeps on giving.

Those are good velocity numbers. It takes me 50gr of RS62 to get a 7mm 139gr SST up to about 2900fps.

Gosh my 7x57 barrel is 24 inches. You definitely have a fast barrel.
Hodgdon sites shows 2617fps with 44gr shooting out of a 24" barrel. I got about 50fps more with a 2" shorter barrel. Weird stuff, too many variables when it comes to reloading.

Was not able to test out 43-43.2 but did get a chance to 43.8-44 and 43.9 as predicted by you is the magic number.

5635 is 44.0gr
5634 is 43.8gr
5633 is 43.9gr (based on previous ladder chrono, around 2667fps is my estimate)

I have the sako s20 in 6.5 and this is the 3 shot grouping I have achieved at 100 yds with 143grn Hornady eldx and 40.4 grns n160

Great shooting. S20 is a nice gun. What scope do you have mounted? I have another thread on N160 loads. This is the best so far I have done using N160 with 44.4gr. I will probably go back to testing N160 with different bullets.

A valiant scope nothing fancy the max load for the 143 Hornady eldx was 41.4 grns n160
