Peli cases are lovely but very expensive, if you want reasonable quality alternative for a fraction of the cost, have a look on eBay at the Nuprol cases there are 2 sizes in various colours, i have recently bought one and was very impressed with it for the money, i bought the smaller case for £65 and my Tac a1 folded fits in there lovely, i went for the pick and pluck foam and that was the only disappointment, so i have replaced it with a piece high density foam which cost me £17 cut to size.
If you think somebody might decide, or have time when loading, to jump up and down on your case put a 2" x 2" block of wood the width of your case in the middle to strengthen it.Would you jump up and down on it with your rifle inside?
For Travelling with a rifle on a plane a Peli or Peli storm is the case to buy. There are a couple of other brands that are as good as Peli available at about the same price.Peli cases are lovely but very expensive, if you want reasonable quality alternative for a fraction of the cost, have a look on eBay at the Nuprol cases there are 2 sizes in various colours, i have recently bought one and was very impressed with it for the money, i bought the smaller case for £65 and my Tac a1 folded fits in there lovely, i went for the pick and pluck foam and that was the only disappointment, so i have replaced it with a piece high density foam which cost me £17 cut to size.
They are a pain to get in cars if you have a long barreled rifle but I would still deal with that rather than seperating stock and action on non system rifle with potential of loss of zero/ loosing screws etc. It's only the initial transport that is interesting, after you get to your destination the rifle can be carried in normal slip.Be a bit cautious of full length hard cases, they can be quite "challenging" to fit into cars and a real pig to deal with on a daily basis. I use a peli 1700 (I think, it's the short one) that takes the rifle , stock and scope broken down, you can also shove in a few spare socks and toiletries.
