Looking for advice on which gun case for to take rifles abroad on flights thanks in advance

Peli cases are lovely but very expensive, if you want reasonable quality alternative for a fraction of the cost, have a look on eBay at the Nuprol cases there are 2 sizes in various colours, i have recently bought one and was very impressed with it for the money, i bought the smaller case for £65 and my Tac a1 folded fits in there lovely, i went for the pick and pluck foam and that was the only disappointment, so i have replaced it with a piece high density foam which cost me £17 cut to size.

Are you confident that it would stand up to baggage handlers?

Would you jump up and down on it with your rifle inside?

I have long 1750 peli and have seen the state of it after one return journey abroad. I need a short case and am interested in saving money. But don’t want to compromise on protection.

I was going to say it also depends on how often you’ll use the case, but I decided it didn’t matter.

1) How much do you value the rifles you’ll carry ?
2) How will it effect the trip if it/they get damaged ?

In the great scheme of things, the Peli is a small price to pay. They are pretty much bomb proof, and you’ll either use it over many trips, or if it’s a one off trip, sell it afterwards, they are really sort after.

Try EBay normally have them listed.

I use a Tuffpack case, not the smallest but you can easily get 2 rifles plus some gear in it and is really tough. Alan Rhone does them, not cheap but used mine for several years and not one issue with it. They do great ammo boxes too.

When your travel case is full you can easily have £5K worth of gear in there

Do you really want to trust a cheaper case ? For the sake of saving £100 -£150 at most ?

If you think somebody might decide, or have time when loading, to jump up and down on your case put a 2" x 2" block of wood the width of your case in the middle to strengthen it.
I have seen plastic shotgun cases used for modular rifles with a couple of blocks glued in place in this manner and it certainly improved the rigidity of the case.
Maybe the cost of the contents didn't leave much left over for a Peli ;-)

When you see the way the airport luggage/security handlers treat them you may want to change you mind on the cheap ones.
Anybody would think there is an Olympic discipline for guncase distance throwing.

I bought a Peli iM3300 earlier this year and it comfortably accommodated two rifles to SA. Both rifles arrived just fine both ways. The option of four padlocks and tough build tipped in favour of this case. Happy with performance.

I had a Peli 1750, I think, the long one ? well I nearly broke my back lifting it before putting anything in it so got rid of it pretty smartish.
From what I have seen of the activity of the airport baggage handlers is that the heavier the case the more chance of it being thrown or let drop.
I now have a Peli 1700, the short one I think ? and that is as much as I would want to lug around on short haul but would certainly recommend it for long haul.
On short haul these days I use the Blaser case and find it is man enough for my needs.

Be a bit cautious of full length hard cases, they can be quite "challenging" to fit into cars and a real pig to deal with on a daily basis. I use a peli 1700 (I think, it's the short one) that takes the rifle , stock and scope broken down, you can also shove in a few spare socks and toiletries.

For Travelling with a rifle on a plane a Peli or Peli storm is the case to buy. There are a couple of other brands that are as good as Peli available at about the same price.
I have 2 Peli cases and i bought a Nuprol case for my .22 for transporting the rifle in my car. Nuprol is a third of the price of a Peli and half the quality.
Nuprol are made for paint ball guns. Would i fly with one of my rifles in a Nuprol? Not a chance. I will be using it in June when i drive back to England because it a adequate car case. You get what you pay for.

They are a pain to get in cars if you have a long barreled rifle but I would still deal with that rather than seperating stock and action on non system rifle with potential of loss of zero/ loosing screws etc. It's only the initial transport that is interesting, after you get to your destination the rifle can be carried in normal slip.

When I used to carry my Remington rifle 'broken down' I always carried a 'Fat Wrench' to put it back together again at the same torque, although on one trip to Poland I did forget to pack it and put it back together 'finger/hand' tight and it was just as accurate.

I Didn't say the Nuprol case was the same quality as the Pelicase because it's not, i said it was reasonable quality which for transporting a rifle with NV kit on to the field it's good enough,

And i see no reason why anybody would want to jump up and down on their rifle case Pelicase or not. Your quite correct you do get what you pay for, but some stuff is just over priced for what it is. i bought an Aim50 drag bag because everyone telling me it's the best quality, but the strap came off in my hand 3rd time out. You guys are happy with your Pelicases, i'm happy with my Nuprol chinese case, you don't have to justify to me how much better it is, a case is better than no case. i don't travel abroad so maybe don't have to worry about the security of my rifle, but Pelicase or not someone could still wander off with it.
