Hi, thinking of changing my moderator, anyone using Hausken 224 on 22.250, what are your thoughts, cheers

I've got Hauskens on both my 223 and 7 x 64 and am very pleased with them. Not sure of the models as I am in NZ and they are locked in my cabinet!

David.

Not 22-250 but on my 222 and 20 Tac. As far as I know a few keepers locally have them too. Not heard a bad report about them. I would happily buy another if and when I need one.

Just put a hausken jd224 hunter on my 6.5x55 very impressed like shooting a moderated 223, going to replace my atec hertz for one for my 30-06

I use a Hausken on my T3 22/250. I had it extremed. This is where stainless steel mesh is wound between the baffle plates. Adds little to the weight, reduces noise further and I am overall happy with the moderator.

Hausken and A tec are the two premier brands over here. I have both and think there's not much in it. If I had to choose, Hausken.

I've just got one for my 30 06, I'm a big fan of ase ultras and was a bit yes/no bout getting one. The weight is considerably less than the ase , so anyway I bought one just because of the light weight and it's going on my walkabout stalking rifle

Time will tell if it's up to the build quality of the ASE ,but when I zerod the new rifle with it on , it does the job and I'm happy with it

They are quieter than a Jet Z and lighter but they do need care. I corroded mine slightly by not drying it before putting it away. I can't spray it as it has the XTRM mesh (a useful addition making it even quieter)

I have three Hausken JD224, they perform very well from 223 to 300wm. They have a reputation for being bored a bit tight. My two 308's had flyers every now and then and I bored out the Hauskens a bit. Since then the accuracy is perfect. For 223 I use a 243 Hausken. I have shot a 223 22-250 and 243 from the 243 mod and all seemed tame enough. If I need a new mod or another mod it would probably be a JD224.
They do corrode internally somewhat..... most alu mods do

They are not quieter than a jet-z (like for like on the same rifle, we tested them both)
The XTRM is good but too pricey and they are still a bit bulky

All aluminium mods should be sprayed with light oil to neutralise the acidic components left in after use

Flyers are much more likely to be a consequence of a less than concentric muzzle thread, loose mods or debris in or on the thread and shoulder
By boringness them out you have reduced its efficiency dramatically
It's no coincidence that the mods with the tightest bore to calibre tolerance are the quitests in tests

No you don't reduce efficiency dramatically, very slightly maybe. In my case increasing bore size by 0.3-0.4mm made the moderator useful. No matter what, rifle manufacturers will manufacture threads on the end of barrels... these threads will have slight tolerances and moderator manufacturers must live with it... others do but Hausken has a reputation for having too small holes in the baffles for cal. The holes in a moderator must be bigger than the bullet wobbling through.... I hope we all agree.
Way more "efficiency" is achieved by a bit of wire mesh inside the moderator compared to a few tenths of a mm in bore diameter.

Well on my 308 shot blind in front of 2 people who did not know which moderator was being used the JD 224 xtrm was markedly quieter to the bystanders ear. Same between jet z and JD184 XTRM on a 30-06 though less of a difference.
This mirrors other tests I've seen.
You can't spray an XTRM - it's filled with wire wool.
I have no axe to grind - I shoot jetz and Hausken

There is a difference between perceived sound reduction, and actual sound reduction.

I would have thought it difficult to compare mods in the field as there are so many variables.

I do agree that the hole (through the moderator) does need to be larger than the passing bullet but the larger the hole the more expanding gas passes through and the 'louder' it is. Mods with the tightest bore to calibre tolerance offer greater sound suppression. A total of 0.3/0.4mm radial clearance is OK, adding another 0.4mm would make the modferator 'much' louder.

Bullets "wobble" do they @ejg ? Perhaps you could explain that ?

I agree however I'd rather use one that hurts my ears less!
