I only have Peltors. Sportac or Tactical sport, depending on where marketed. I think the chip that does the cleverness is very good. Check the specs. of others and you might just find that they are licensing/repackaging it. 'Crank them up and you will hear far better than normal.
Other brands, use something similar, neater fitting, even more durable and resistant to abuse and the environment. The Sporttacs/Tactical Sports are quite bulky, particularly if you use shotguns.,
Yet more brands are just not in this class, generally you get what you pay for. Peltors and Sordins seem to be pretty good, I've tried both, the Sordins were neater. But I have the Peltors so not changing until they die. Can't speak about lesser things, no experience.
The CommTacs are a class above, even more intrinsic attenuation, plus the microphones etc. and a whole load more connectivity, mostly through proprietary connectors and cables. Perfect for e.g. RCOs but not for my use.
Nowadays I have very expensive (not to me) digital hearing aids Thank you NHS for the Phonaks. Bluetoothed to the max. Connected to my phone, walkie-talkies, whatever. Custom earmoulds, turn them up and super-hearing, good for much impulse sound attenuation, actually I've been told I probably can't be damaged by usual rifle blast. Meanwhile blocking pretty much anything damaging in normal use. Nevertheless, on the range, the Peltors go on top. Some people use muzzle brakes, which I think still requires "double plugging", just to be sure. Still, you have to be quite deaf already to qualify for the best NHS hearing aids and custom moulds. Better not to get there.
