Hearing protection recommendations with good sound amplification

I only have Peltors. Sportac or Tactical sport, depending on where marketed. I think the chip that does the cleverness is very good. Check the specs. of others and you might just find that they are licensing/repackaging it. 'Crank them up and you will hear far better than normal.

Other brands, use something similar, neater fitting, even more durable and resistant to abuse and the environment. The Sporttacs/Tactical Sports are quite bulky, particularly if you use shotguns.,

Yet more brands are just not in this class, generally you get what you pay for. Peltors and Sordins seem to be pretty good, I've tried both, the Sordins were neater. But I have the Peltors so not changing until they die. Can't speak about lesser things, no experience.

The CommTacs are a class above, even more intrinsic attenuation, plus the microphones etc. and a whole load more connectivity, mostly through proprietary connectors and cables. Perfect for e.g. RCOs but not for my use.

Nowadays I have very expensive (not to me) digital hearing aids Thank you NHS for the Phonaks. Bluetoothed to the max. Connected to my phone, walkie-talkies, whatever. Custom earmoulds, turn them up and super-hearing, good for much impulse sound attenuation, actually I've been told I probably can't be damaged by usual rifle blast. Meanwhile blocking pretty much anything damaging in normal use. Nevertheless, on the range, the Peltors go on top. Some people use muzzle brakes, which I think still requires "double plugging", just to be sure. Still, you have to be quite deaf already to qualify for the best NHS hearing aids and custom moulds. Better not to get there.

I’d highly recommend speaking to Earshot Communications. They are very competitively priced, give excellent advice, and have great backup, and support.

I’ve used the Peltor Sportac for years, and they work very well, for both hearing protection, and amplified sound, especially good for driven boar, or similar.

I bought into the “MSA Sordin” Supreme X, Blaze camo, and should have saved my money !

More recently, I have started wearing some 3M/Peltor in ear plugs, which also work well to protect your hearing, and have 3 amplified sound levels.

Very good, but not as good as the Sportac. However, if you’re shooting in either wet, or very hot conditions, where you want to wear a brimmed hat, in ear plugs are the only practical solution.

Peltor SportTac for game shooting and clays. For the rifle range they are insufficient if there‘s someone fooling around with a muzzle break. This this I recommend the Peltor ProTac - Shooter version, not the hunter version.
I agree, also muzzle brakes are an absolute nuisance to other range users. If you use one, let someone else fire your rifle repeatedly while you sit on the next firing position next to them, you might very well change your mind about using one in the company of others!

I wonder if they will fit my old style Peltor Com-Tacs 💭. Any chance of a link please?

Thanks

K

Those are the cheaper option - they just don’t have the fancy box but are the same otherwise!

If you phone and ask for John Kelly he’ll be able to advise about the fit.
