Hmr

Have the 17 HMR ammunition problems been corrected, or are there still issues.

Winchester has advertized that they have toughened up their case but it maybe a year before you see that stuff. I'd still view all HMR with some suspicion.~Muir

What problems?
I have fired over 3k rounds through mine in the last year.....not had any issues, just a lot of dead rabbits!

I fired 10K through mine before running into bad ammo. It's luck of the draw.
Split necks. Split Shoulders. Squib loads: Any guesses why Winchester it touting it's new designed HMR brass as stronger and more ductile?? ~Muir

I beleive Winchester has moved its production of its HMR ammo to one of its own factorys (previously i beleive all HMR were made in the same factory regardless of brand) My local RFD now only stocks Winchester and when you examine the fired cases you can visibly see the brass is a tad thicker. As yet no spit necks or any of the other problems experienced previously.

Thanks for the replies, I have one on my ticket but haven't purchased yet (18 months) as I saw a couple of broken guns through dodgy ammo and didn't fancy the same. I have thought about changing to the 17 hornet but don't like the savage, CZ are taking there time, and the finish of those I have seen wasn't that good. So I think I am looking for a CZ 16 inch Hmr.

Winchester was the first contractee to get a bad LOT of ammunition from CCI/Hornady back 5 or 6 years ago and they instituted an expensive recall. They did move their plant and have made 17HMR for a while. Recently they have run ads showing cut-away's of their brass and it's new reinforcements. Looks like Winchester will be the safe bet for HMR if you believe the ads.~Muir

I handled a CZ 17 Hornet at the SHOT Show this year in Las Vegas. It was finished no differently than any other CZ I've handled. I think you're just trying to talk yourself into a rifle that is readily available... (Available probably because the crappy ammo is still floating around ;) ) I'd wait out the 17 Hornet if you are inclined to a CF rifle. It will be a better rifle all around. ~Muir

no point telling everyone this ~muir.

HMR HATTERS,they all swear that their experience of the wee calibre has made them all sell theirs.

I have had 5 over the years and the plain and simple reason i sold my last one was,

cash....................when you need funds for more important things like your family the rifle has to go.

bob.

ps: the guy who has it swears by it and loves the complete set up i sold him,

I loved my Anschutz HMR but like Bob mine had to go for financial reasons.
The ammo problem has ,however, put me off getting another

I sympathize. I have gotten rid of some fantastic rifles to pay for braces, school clothes, Christmas presents. It's the mark of a decent man, I think, to give up his things for his family.

I like the HMR. Still have three of them but I don't shoot them like I used to. It was the performance that made me dry-dock mine. Accurate but not very lethal. I switched to 30 grain 22WMR. Later, to 5mm Remington. Can't say I looked back.~Muir

Struggling to see how case can be made thicker in the neck area. Bullets are a given size; as is the chamber, so case neck can only occupy the difference??.

I believe what Winchester is touting is a "reinforced" ** shoulder and case head. Remember this: The HMR doesn't operate at the fringes of practical rimfire ballistics -nothing radical. The operating pressures are the same as those for the 22WMR, 22LR, 17 MAch II, etc. What has happened to the HMR is a Quality Control issue in the production. The HMR never needed a thicker neck, ever. In fact, the cartridge once worked splendidly before they changed... something. ~Muir

(**When they say they have reinforced the brass, it could be an added thickness of just a few ten thou of an inch.)

See post #6 "you can see the brass is a tad thicker".

Better eyesight than mine (not saying much) to see a few tenths of thou!!.

I handled the Cz Hornet at the CLA game fair this year and found it sharp edged and not as well finished as my Cz 22, which I think is very good and good value. I hope when they do arrive they will better

I've found most CZ's a little bristly in places. I forgive them because of the accuracy their rifles deliver. The one in LV was standard fare. No better or worse than any rimfire or CF CZ I've handled.~Muir
