How do you go about restoring/customising an old Mauser 98

That is one pretty working rifle that mate! I do love a rounded off pistol grip, just looks so right. Can't blame you for removing the peep sight since it might be just a little tricky to replace, still a great place for a peep though.

Last pic shows the trimmed bolt and also that the flip up peep sight has been removed from the dovetail on the back of the bolt - too scared I lose it! Sorry the pics are not great - I'll improve with some practice, I hope....!

Thats a transitional pre war oberndorf intermediate small ring small shank, you look after that. Shame about the bolt butchery, should have been kept original and just set back closer to the bolt body. Should have a 4x scope in clawmounts mounted on the barrel and show the roll stamp and date. Can be laser welded and re engraved I guess in a future restoration. Charger hump should never have been milled off, good mounts from both Ziegler, eaw and recknagel are available for non modified. Beautiful gun, but someone should be made to answer for destroying one of the rarest actions made!

PKL......sadly, much of the butchery was done before I got hold of it. It had a Tasco scope on it and the previous owner had failed to realise there was a height difference between the front and rear mount, so the scope was pointing to the sky and he couldn't even get it on paper.....so it came on the market. His previous butchery has been laser welded (it wasn't pretty under the Tasco mounts...) and the rifle re-proofed, and what you see now is pretty much 'the best of a bad job', but the rifle has a lovely trigger, is beautifully headspaced and shoots wonderfully well for an old lady. The scope is a 6 x 45 (helps with my aged eyes...) and although I have a 'modern' Fraser built on a Mannlicher butterknife action, I find I take the Mauser out almost every time I open the cabinet. The mounts are Recknagel and yes, Bewsher 500, it's a take-down.

I know where your coming from I've a similar barrelled action that's been messed with and shoot out that I intend to rebuild into a nice 275 for myself, it'll never be a perfect orbendorf with what went before but it can be a pretty rifle.

If it is not too much trouble to import the wood, I can help any of you source different styles of English and Oberndorf stocks and authentic buttplates and swivels for sporting Mausers 1905 to 1939.
