how far north have muntjac made it

Now i'm in inverness and have never seen a muntjac have any north people seen a muntjac. just wondering how far north people have seeen them????

I have heard reports of one been seen on the side of loch ness in the foyers / Gorthlec area. Was told this by a local resident who was adament it was a muntjac.

As a rule I was always told they'd not made it past the Humber yet. I live in south Yorkshire directly inland from the Humber and we don't have them here. Though they do have them about 10 miles south of Doncaster.

I saw one 20 yrs ago below York,

Surely any north of us have to have been released. If you look on a map there's a lot of obsticles on that side of the country for the little blyters. Humber, Trent, Ouse, M18, M180, M62.
While we're on the subject. How far inland do they reach?

I have to doubt they have spread all that way North. Surely they are nowhere near the Scottish borders, they havent even got to parts of the South yet. If so they must have been given help .

It will be interesting to see how they fair in the colder Northern climate how far will they go?

And also how long will it take for their breeding to become seasonal?

They have bumped into the south bank of the Humber and stopped for now, its a pretty big obstacle for them unless they take the bridge or hitch a lift. At the top end of the estary there is a network of big canals with steel piled banks which are real deer killers, they get in and can't get out, but there are bridges and they are much shorter than the Humber bridge, plus they don't need to pay £3.00 to get across!

Was that the same resident that reported seeing 'Nessie'

There are no muntjac in Scotland according to SNH, however, I have heard that there are regular sightings of them in the Scottish Borders and 1 sighting near the Friarton Bridge at Perth. These are reported as being either escapees or deliberate releases as the habitat between the south of England and Hadrians is not conducive to natural migration.

It's not that much colder up in Jockistan and munties came through the last two winters of severe weather down here very well so I can't see any reason at all why they wouldn't thrive up there. A great deal of their spread has been courtesy of the products of Mr Ifor Williams and I'm sure that they will make it up North sooner or later despite the best efforts of the kilted commissars.

Gents I frequently see them in Mexborough in South Yorkshire

























.......They are usually hanging by their back legs in my garage after a trip south to the ground i have lol!.....





They have been definitely seen in Retford/Ranby 25 miles south of Donny ive seen the slots myself, I've been told they are just north of Donny in the woods around high melton - I walk my dogs there a lot and never seen one...
