Most of what you say also applies in the States, with one exception. That exception is the written article. As I grew older and had more REAL experience, I found a large number of the writers to be quite prone to exaggeration (to put it mildly). If they could write well, but barely had any stalking/hunting experience, they still sold articles.


To somewhat echo what PineMarten said, the brave new World Wide Web has allowed sharing of knowledge, and not just between neophytes and older wiser heads. Once upon a time, if you wanted to break out of your boundaries there were only two ways- knowing someone/paying someone, or putting in the scouting/learning time yourself. This made it almost impossible for someone of average means. Now you can scout with google maps, email game and fish departments, chat on forums like this, etc....
