How to calculate recoil/ eye relief needed?

I appreciate this is not the sort of thing you want to test in a live fire environment as scope bite is real and can cause quite serious injury. Having said this it will vary on what, who and how a rifle is being shot, for example I'm a big lad so physics dictates that recoil ought to result in less movement for me than a wee fellow. Most scopes are very particular in terms of adopting a specific amount of eye relief in any event so chances are you choice of scope will dictate your eye relief over who and how a rifle is being shot. All said and done the standard 3-4 inches will see you right

I’m a wee fellow

I met my match with someone else’s 600 nitro

However it was rifle fit and poor control that caused the issue

Recoil management is much much more about rifle fit and technique

Size and weight of the shooter Is almost irrelevant

Having said that, I’m ultra cautious about eye relief and scoped medium / large bores

… and I don’t shoot them prone!

Just a thought , i dont have many!, if you have other rifles that (fit) ok ,shoulder one and get someone to measure where you are on that one and transfer the same over, doesn,t allways work if stock is short tho.

Hi all - possibly a stupid question, but is there any way to calculate the amount of eye relief required to safely use a scope on a specific rifle? I have just ordered a scope with 45mm eye relief that I am concerned might not be enough for my .308 (which has a heavy varmint barrel and with this scope and my mod will weigh 5.5kg - shooting Federal Powershok 150gr, muzzle energy 2650ft/lb, muzzle velocity 2820fps).

Cheers
2” will be fine with proper technique, .308 isn’t a real thumper

Agreed - especially off sticks. I wouldn’t be rushing to try it prone though. I have used a Pard 007 on my .308 without issue.
Either way fire a few shots - the answer to your OP (perhaps unlike your vision) will immediately become clear…

The heavier the rifle the slower the recoil.

I have never considered this but i spend a good amount of time setting a scope up correctly to get the best view both eyes open and my head in the correct place . The last bit " head in the right place " is the relevant bit !

Just for a FYI if you do get a kiss off a 308 then try and ensure that you don't have hawke metal lens caps at 'your' end .

Hmm.
Oddly enough the worst I ever saw was with a .25 (?) Patriot (absolute monster) air rifle when the proud new owner put his eye against the scope.
Silly boy!

1) Get a small mirror….

2) Take the rifle out to a target or a soft bank or other suitable back stop.

3) Chamber a round and fire into the target/bank/backstop…

4) Lay rifle down.

5) Check mirror, if any bleeding, bruising or blindness is viewed, increase eye relief by 1/4” towards the barrel.

The above should be video’d and posted after test is complete.

hahahahahaha - genius.

I so remember that episode - shouting at the telly Noooooooo cos it was so obviously going to be the outcome. I hope she smacked him off camera for such an epic "set up to fail" moment!

Looked like the rifle wasn't in her shoulder enough and this allowed the rifle to recoil back more that normal..
