Interested to hear from anyone with a full time HWV deer dog. Keen to hear experiences and which lines are being used. They’re a popular trialing breed but I don’t know anyone using one full time on deer. I’m considering adding one to the team.

One which works on deer alongside a full time stalker, contractor etc.

If a full time stalker/deer manager/contractor (so many different titles these days) owns one and has used it on deer and can offer some input that would also be great.

I have had one on a small contract. He was with me 3 days a week on fallow and 5 days a month on roe in the borders.
Would I have another yes.
I lost him at 8 yrs due to cancer.

Make sure the parents are health checked
hips huu andtry and find if there is eperlesy in the lines

Now gone down the hound route an Alpine Dachsbracke.

Thanks Pendle. What was his drive like? Was he focused on the job? Also like to know what they’re like in rough weather? Cheers

Like Pendle said they are all different.
Spend time choosing a litter and take your time training them.
Though I’m not a full-time Stalker mine was out with me once or twice a week. She would’ve been just as happy being out five days a week. No lack of drive or keenness to work deer.
Happy in all weather except thunder.
Walked and indicated at heal well.
Tracked brilliantly.
She Would run down and bay injured deer but wouldn’t hold them.

As a rule of thumb they are a softer dog than some other breeds but because of that easier to train.

If you want more than that and are a capable trainer get a GWP🫡

Thanks for your input Trucraft. My current deer dog is a GWP. She’s 7 and I’m looking to bring another dog on. The wife asked me to consider a HWV, which is why I’m looking for some first hand experience

I have a HWV and she is a great deer dog except in prolonged rain. I would really look at the breeding and what the sire and dam are used for. Culdrien are worth a look
Mine hated heavy rain.
We where stalking in the borders loverly . I was sitting on a plank behind some pallets .
A thunderstorm came from know where. Kite shot underneath me and the plank trying to get out of the rain.
