The notion of banning semi-auto centrefires was first mooted in Tory home secretary Robert Carr's Green Paper of 1973 along with a whole load of other restrictions on the law-abiding shooting community.

Makes little sense....some semi-auto's (like the Browning BAR or the Ruger .44 carbine with its 4 shot tube mag) actually have much less shots-per-minute potential than many manually operated rifles out there....not that such matters to the legislators.
