Have a small project to do - frame for winch

5mm wall 50 mm box with 6mm flat plate for “foot pads) to be drilled and bolted to truck bed (I ordered 4mm wall but recieved 5mm …..)

Coukd the collective advise what stick welder would suit

I was thinking a 150 amp would work

I can weld - though havent for several years I’m sure the bike can be ridden again

Are any of the sub 200 quid inverter machines any good - if so which

Cheers in advance

Oh - anyone selling one they don’t want that’s in working order (full kit needed )

my next welder and i use lincoln and mosa so both up there will be from a uk company called technical arc in yorkshire.
most of there stuff is made in the uk they keep stock of parts and they are super keen on there prices.
if your not planning on doing anymore welding after why not pay someone to do it for you.
if you have plans of more projects id certainly look at technical arc.
i have used there stuff and it is good.
only my opinion

I run 3.2 7018 @ 90 amps on my mobile welder, about the same with my inverter but it is a bit smother.

If you are just working flat then a pack of 3.2 6013 will be fine with a 150 amp inverter.

If you are anywhere near Sk179sh I can more than happy to weld it up for you.
As for the welder 150amp will be fine little welding units have come on a long way

Remember to check your power source against the machine before you buy something that is outsized for your circuits/breakers.

A 150 amp dc inverter will run off a 13amp 240 UK wall socket. My Orlkian is dual voltage also self seeking 240/110 and will burn a 5mm Rod...not all day but for a good while. The fuse in the 3pin plug will pop first!!

That would be nice. Whoever based the US household system on 110 volt ac made a mistake in my opinion. Takes forever to heat an electric kettle when you're limited to 1500 watts on most 15 amp/110volt circuits. We do have dedicated 220v circuits but usually just for the dryer, electric stove and in the garage/shop if you've added them yourself.

If you had mentioned a bit earlier Andy, I could have dropped you one off yesterday with the rods & a screen.:coat:

I have an ancient Oxford stick welder I bought for £40 years ago changed the cooling out and it still runs great. Bought a semi decent mig and it doesn’t get much use now. Try a Welders | Hyundai Power Products
I’ve been happy with a couple of their products.
I remember a fella putting down an Oxford he'd lifted out of a van, a little bit heavily, everything under the lid parted company and sat on the bottom of the oil tank. (The oil is hygroscopic and had never been changed out, this corroded the parts).

Any sub 200 quid inverter welder will do what you what. They lay a really nice weld. Far FAR better than any old fashioned transformer style welder.
AND they are SOOOOO much lighter.
This is from someone who remembers having to use a forklift to move a CIG 200 amp welder around.
I bought a tiny 120 amp unit ($100 - £52) 'just for a laugh' off Ebay and have been delighted with it's performance.
It measures 12' by 5' by 6' and weighs 2kg, and I use it around the yard, sometimes hanging off my belt so I can move around.
The LED screen showing me the amp setting gave up after 2 uses, but it still welds, I just have to guess the setting.
So if you are only going to do the odd weld now and then a sub £200 welder will do the trick.
Just don't go for one with every feature known to mankind, they will have had to compromise somewhere.
Better to get a well known brand with just MMA or MIG and decent leads.

PS: I have a Unimig 4 in 1 AC-DC with high frequency start and a foot pedal. It does everything including TIG Aluminium beautifully but cost £1300, and weighs 50kg.
you don't need this level of welder.

I used to do structural repairs to mobile cranes with a small 240v inverter welder , it would run 2.5mm and 3.2mm rods all day at the pace i needed to go (interpass temps !) with E110-18g rods

i would get yourself some E6013 rods or some spezials E7016 and you'll be fine with a small inverter welder , they really are little wonders now

These are excellent, I have one, just found this one on flea bay, good price, seller is nothing to do with me btw

Gents - Thabk uou, I’ve actually borrowed a 180 amp mig from a friend who I didn’t realise had one, so am sorted and will be getting on with my project later this week

I could maybe lend you a reasonable basic little ESAB inverter runs 2.5 mm runs 6013, i have more than enough welding plant . Obviously dont weld the winch , always bolt ! deffo better MMA than MIG if your outside on 5 mm ( thats a lot for a trailer btw 5mm wall ) it does take a bit of remembering
