I used a Rico RH50 against a Thermion 2 XP50 for an extensive period of time.
Do not believe certain video reviews or anyone pushing these products at close range. 12 micron even very inexpensive sub <£1500 ones are very sharp and clear at a close range, a lot are deceived by this. Originally the Rico was quoted in the documentation as <50mk sensor, then when HIK announced a <35mk sensor they immediately changed the netD ON PAPER !! to <40mk , make of that what you will ??
On testing the Thermion 2 XP50 against the Rico this is what I found.
Rico
- Severe latency when panning left to right, exaggerated even more when utilising digital zoom
- literally around 15 seconds to turn on and show the reticule....slow..
- No scaled PIP fuction
- No sound when recording and no interlaced icons, only the reticule is visible no PIP is visible either on recording.
- "Washed out" background detail to enhance target detail by auto lowering contrast, looks like a cartoon..
- No manual controls at all, no gain modes or contrast/brightness control, only screen brightness..
- A LOT I sold were returned with claimed POI issues, others quoted lose dioptres, power downs etc
- Reticule in bottom qtr of screen on airgun and rimfires, not in centre region.
Thermion 2 XP50
- Insane overall detail, of foilage, background, etc this is the most difficult to resolve in high humidity, background is PARAMOUNT on a rifle scope in regards to safe shots.
- TRUE <25mk netD rating and True quality F1.0 lens.
- Better overall image, more natural, sharper, digital zoom function better.
- Instantly starts up 2 seconds
- Full control of gain modes and contrast/brightness.
- Full HD recording with sound and fully interlaced menu functions.
- Fully scaled PIP in 0.1 increments main display and within PIP with MILDOT reticule
- Reticule centralised
- Slick software, premium build.
Do not look up close, take both in the field in good and bad weather, use the functions throughout, look at live quarry, ignore all youtube videos with animals practically on there feet. like a certain company always shows.
Ignore any prostaff videos, not all, but a lot have sold their soul and will not give a truthful account, VERY misleading, some of the items I see promoted as being favourite kit, I just shake my head, because its total crap and there getting told to promote crap !! It's all about sales, you have a £ sign on your head and there quite happy dropping a pile of junk on your toes..
From discussing with users across the world who are using a variation of 640 sensors, all claimed the T2 XP50 sensors basically give the best image from all the available main brand thermal units, apart from the N-Vision which nudges the Thermion 2 XP50, yes a little higher magnification would be nice, we know..
So yes as Bruce says, the RH50 is 100% not where its at, its massively over hyped and over rated, myself personally I wouldn't own one, not from when I tested the units alongside, severely lacking.... If you do like the format the RL42 has all the same niggles but is a much better value unit at it's price point, plus black hot works correctly unlike the RH50, I would definitely go for the RL42 if you do want a Rico rather than the RH50 in terms of value/performance ..
