Iron Dome

Israel’s Iron Dome anti-missile defence successfully intercepted Iran’s latest ballistic missiles. The Fatteh-2 hypersonic missiles reach over 14,000 fps which makes a .204 look like a paper aeroplane. The mind boggles at the ability to shoot these out of the sky with their own missiles…. The precision and complexity of these two vectors converging at the same moment in three dimensions.

It is amazing technology. I think the intercepting missiles detonate in the pathway of the incoming ballistic missile so its more akin to a shotgun pattern than a single rifle bullet, and they put themselves into the pathway of the incoming missile so its a head on shot rather than a fast crosser.

But still it’s clever stuff.

I’d love to know the relative costs…bet the Iranian missiles are a lot cheaper and more cost effective.

But can ever you put a cost on human lives?
Not in my opinion!
The value of human life is a constant concept used for all kinds if purposes, although rarely spoken about.

The decision to change regulation is often tempered by the costs in terms of lives saved versus the cost in pounds over changing/not changing the law.

I read an article on Iron Dome, it’s just the first of a 3 layer system,

Israel's three key air defence systems: Iron Dome: Intercepts short-range surface-to-surface rockets (bottom layer) David's Sling: Intercepts short to medium, and medium to long-range surface-to-surface missiles (middle layer) Arrow 2 and 3: Intercepts medium to long-range, and long-range missiles (upper layer)

You have to admire the Tech but imagine how much better life would be if all that money was spent on education and healthcare, sadly that’s not about to happen

If the UK was attacked tonight, in the way that Israel was two nights ago, I wonder how we would cope? Just thinking...
Not long, the attack would be external and very quickly internal as well I would think... Just thinking....

It is indeed.

Apparently Iron Dome is also smart enough to determine where a rocket is heading. If it is destined to hit a populated area then a missile is despatched to intercept, but if not it is left. The missiles cost somewhere between $40,000-$50,000 each, so they are careful in how they are used.

This argument goes all the way back to WWII at least.

Air defence is very expensive if you’re committed to protecting lives. The opponent only needs to keep lobbing cheap stuff at you long enough for you to run out of your expensive air defence.

The Russians have been playing this game very effectively in Ukraine, grinding down the stocks of hi tech air defence with cheap and crappy soviet era missiles and drones.

I think it's afairly old tecnology. Uses likely the same trajectory tracking radar as did Green Archer in the 1970s. Except to predict where it will be going not where it has come from. With some sort of proximity radar in the interceptor missile? Even so it does seem to work.

Hence how important the recent attack on Toropets, amongst others.

Sadly, many of the main advances in technology employed today were developed for war purposes. Thankfully they are generally used afterwards for peaceful purposes.

Some examples are aeroplanes and radar and I'm sure that the rifles and accoutrements such as scopes/night vision used for the likes of stalking wouldn't be as effective as they are today without wartime innovations. Aeroplanes going from not really existing to jet engines within a period of around 40 years. The radar in the front of my car that tells me I'm about to crash and puts the brakes on if I don't brake!

But I'd much rather be crossing the Atlantic in a steamship and driving a model T Ford if it meant there would be no wars.

Uk has in effect no missile defense system. We don't have an army merely a defence force and a navy so short of sailors we cant crew the small no of ships we currently have.
Got to hand it to the IDF and Mossad they are well ahead of the curve.
I wouldn't be surprised if Iran looses its nuclear manufacturing capacity in the next month or so.
