The Texas study provided evidence that, on average, 21 shots were made for every deer killed, or about 10 shorts per deer hit.

Interesting stuff but the comment above was the one that fully attracted my attention. Now, the first thing to say is that you usually have to read the actual study to get the real info as the press release often messes it up so much as to sometimes give the exact opposite of what the science showed.

It isn't clear to me if the above statement applies to rifle or bow, though I suspect bow due to the 50% thing, but none the less the only conclusion is that either an awful lot of people are really, really bad shots to miss a deer with 9 out of every 10 shots or else there is an awful lot of under reporting of wounded animals somewhere in this study. I would be inclined to suspect the latter.

The discussions around bowhunting are full of lots ofngood ideas, and a good amount of ignorant cr*p as well...

As a bowhunter (when I'm back in the US) the hunt completely chnages, when i go back to bowhunting. Stalking, in its purest form, which have learned a lot about here in the UK... we don't known sh*t compared to the skill displayed here, its just a run and gun with a rifle, is a wonderful experience and sport. But, it does not givebthenfeeling of closeness to the animal. Yes, I know there are stalkers who (clmaim?) to get to within touching distance of roe (), but hunting with a bow has a very different feeling.

In the end though. If you have done it all your life, its accepted, legal, and you spend countless hours throughout the year practicing enough to be confident enough to make the shot and therefore go out with your bow (and one should not if one isn't confident enough in one's abilities... Although admittedly some do), it just works.

I understand the debate surounding bowhunting, and in manybcases find it interesting and even challenges my own feelings. I could very well live without the "i once saw on youtube or this movie...." its just not representative. There is no substitute for first hand knowledge... as we often tell people about hunting with rifles, no?

In any event the debate will most probably rage on, here and @ the pub...

At the end of the day, there's people who can shoot accurately and those who can't. Your maximum range should take account of your accuracy capability, whether using a bow or rifle. I know people who would be more accurate with a bow at 75m than many regular stalkers with a rifle, especially freehand without sticks.

An arrow with correct shot placement and a good broadhead kills cleanly and efficiently and has done for thousands of years; although to hear some people go on about it, you would think that deer have undergone some kind of miraculous evolution over the past century, especially since Walt Disney came on the scene...

I think the 'study', (if you can call it that), that was referred to has been subject to a not insignificant amount of critism on this thread: http://www.thestalkingdirectory.co....55-Bowhunting-in-the-UK&highlight=bow+hunting

BTW: There seem to be a few bow hunting threads being revived from up to 3 years ago - some by people who are not posting an introduction. Why is that? :suss:
