Land inspection/ survey - what to expect?

Could u not apply to open ur FAC at the sametime as the variation for a deer rifle?
Then if u had an open ticket it would save everyone the time of going out to inspect the ground (but I must admit not used to all this ground clearance asit doesn't happen in scotland)

It's not so long since, after applying for another / different calibre, tickets would come back with a closed condition on the new one!!!!

It's where the application of the licensing procedure differs yet again between Scotland and the rest of the UK - and not in a particularly good way for us for a change!

Already having an 'open' FAC wouldn't have any influence on the situation if the police are following the HO Guidance in the OP's application for a deer calibre rifle. In support of his 'good reason' for that particular firearm (and assuming the land is not already cleared) they might be looking for "the suitability of land for the firearms requested commensurate with the applicant’s experience." (HOG 13.4 iii). It's not something you can self-certify at application or renewal in the same way that you can decide if land is suitable to shoot over once the firearm is granted and you have it in your (open certificated) mitts.

I think the licensing (procedure) "sic", is different in every one of the constabularies, and then changed even more the lower down the food chain / departments you go.

Absolutely.
in my constabulary area, the FLD have a datasbase of land where permission has been granted in the past & if that's the case, usually there is no site visit made, though I've had a discussion about one particular piece due to some peculiarities WRT safe backstops. Fortunately I was already aware of the issues.

If they say 'the land is not safe' for use of a rifle to control deer, tell them you will have to use a shotgun.
