Larder fridge / drinks chillers

Hi All

Was wondering if anyone knows of or has information on anywhere in the Aberdeen area that sells cheap second hand larder fridges or drinks chillers? One step away from going round the local shops and asking if they are getting rid of theirs. There seems to be plenty of really cheap ones in Glasgow or Perth areas but transporting it up will out weigh the cost of buying a cheap new one up here.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

Search on eBay, but then filter the search results by distance.
That will list nearest items first.

Thanks for that.

Just to expand - I have exhausted these avenues such as gumtree and ebay and needs to be big enough for a roe. Yes something may come up in the Aberdeenshire area if I wait long enough on these sites but looking to secure something a bit sooner. Was wondering if anyone knew of maybe a fridge scrapyard or something similar where such items may be recycled?

There's a stainless one on Gumtree in Banchory I saw, been on for a fortnight unless the listing hasn't been updated for £200. It's hard to tell from the picture if its a full length one or not, just don't have the cash at the minute or it might have ended up in my garage.

Thanks Mick. Yeah saw that earlier. I could get a new larder fridge for close to that which put me off. Trying to get it down to around £100. Sometimes I forget that Aberdeen is its own overpriced bubble though!

I got a larder fridge off Gumtree in great condition for £40 so just keep checking and something will come up.

I would say 180 cm high (internal) or more. Have a look at this page on the Bushwear site. It suggests to fit the fridge converter, it has to be 180com high by 54-60cm wide and have external cooling coils.

Excellent info, thank you, my next question was going to be 'what is the best way to put a bar in the fridge?' i was thinking of bodging an old pull up bar, but the Bushwear conversion kit seems a much more elegant solution....

Does anyone know whats the minimum size fridge for a roe to hang in??

Mine is 1520mm height internally

It will take a roe no probs (Inc head) as long as you make your rail as high as possible

Here's mine with buck hanging on 8" hooks, so some spare room can be had.

Hope that helps a bit

Same boat as me! Been looking for a large chest freezer or a double coke fridge, or somthing along those lines. Hens teeth!

Hi Guys

Thanks for the comments. Found one on Gumtree (pure fluke it has actually come up when I wanted it) in Aberdeen and under £100. He also has a chest freezer in there if anyone is interested http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/whirlpool-chest-freezerwhite/1076471736

Just need to fit a bar now. Thanks for the unistrut idea rigboot. Think it will need a little adaptation for a plastic interior fridge so I don't rip the rivets out when I get some load on it but will post what I get done in due course.

Also was looking to fit a fan in the fridge for circulation as it has none. Just a little USB 6in thing. For those with experience, how did you power it up? Just have the cable leading out through the fridge to the mains socket (with timer adapter possibly) or by some other means?

Just thought I would update the thread now I have one and put something in it. Shelf supports were a bit weird (didn't stick out to put a rail on) and wasn't too keen on drilling holes through it so made a frame from pressure treated wood (old fencing materials). Literally took about 20 mins with a saw and a nail gun. Couple of hooks and there we go. Thanks to all the others who put up their chiller photos for ideas.

Nice looking fridge but as I was a chef in a former life I would be concerned about cleaning the porous timber, is there someway to cover it, paint it just to stop the chance of the timber harbouring anything nasty ?? just a thought :)

At the time it was a quick and cheap fix to a summer hanging problem. Hopefully will replace it with something stainless and more fixed once I get set up in my new house. It only gets used a few times a year but it is an interesting point you raise. As I don't know, do you know of any particularly harmful bacteria that would reside in the wood if left as is? Also how long would it stay there for before dying off?

I wasn't thinking of anything nasty in the timber itself (although some tannilised does come with health warnings), more the fact that you can't clean a porous surface to any reasonable standard, meaning and blood/bacteria will then been ingrained in the wood, this would be fine for the first use buts its once you turn the fridge off til your next successful stalk, this would warm up passed the magic 8oc so potentially you could have a situation in which you're putting 'warm' meat into a bacteria rich environment and this would be compounded if you only turn the fridge on as you fill it. This maybe me just being over cautious but having worked in commercial kitchens I've had a lot of training in food and hygiene. My suggestion would be to remove the timber sand it and paint with a kitchen splash back paint to try and make it wipe clean (you'd only have to paint the interior surfaces), and get in to the habit of turning the fridge on before you go out, so that its chilled ready for the carcass.

Again probably being over cautious - I know a few people that just hang them in the garage for 3 days in fly nets and they never seem to have any issues. ;)
