Legalities of shooting cattle ?

How would I stand if I had to shoot a beast ?
Basically a neighbour has had some cattle escape. Some have turned up in our wood, he has implied they might have to shoot one or all.
Hopefully it won't come to that, but the chances of catching them look a bit slim.

I have AOLQ, would that cover it if it came down to it ?

Not under AOLQ, you need something more specific, you would also need to have him out it in writing that you had permission to do it otherwise you know who will get a bill for having shot his 'prize heffer' funny out it's never the infertile tb infected ones that get out....... Tread carefully.

Been involved in such a deed twice.
Both times the police were present and on both occasions it was done for public safety reasons.Other than that I would be very wary as the other chaps have said.

Call your firearms department they will assist you, just recently I was called out to shoot a whale of all creatures!!!! One phone call to the department and it was sorted, they classed it as a secondary target and animal welfare.

Out of interest, how did that go down with the `Save the Whale` types?

I gotta hear the stry on this one :) !

Yes, a whale, Minkie. The whale and mammal people where there along with a couple of vets, fire brigade, police, press etc. They were all very nice and understood that it had to be done. The whale had been beached for about 5 hours and the tide would not be full in for another 7 hours, so with its full body weight on it chest and internal organs being put under so much pressure it was decided to put it down. Local vets don't have the sort of potent drugs you need to put an animal of that size to sleep and Edinburgh zoo could not give them any due to limited quantity and licensed people allowed to handle it.

After the welfare people had spoken to a mammal society in Australia it was recommended the required caliber for a Minke should be of .30 or above. But after explaining to them that my 6.5x55 with a 140 or 156 gn bullet would generate a muzzle energy close to some of the .30 they allowed me to use my discretion and take the shot if I felt it would do the job. One shot and it was done, vet verified by eye movement and lack of pulse. It was a very different experience, these mammals are very aware of what is going on.

BBC News - Second whale stranded in Firth of Forth is put down

If push comes to shove I will check with my FLO, whoever that is now as They have all merged.

I was thinking it could be a bit of a job to shift one with all this rain, but I suppose it would be easy compared to getting a whale shifted.

Apparantly one got hit by a car last night, wrote the car off, unsurprisingly. I hope no one was hurt.
There is still one on it's own somewhere.

I think you may be the only person on the UK who can add a whale to their
quarry list ...terrible shame for the beast but better than being left to suffer.
Couldn't you have sent it to the taxidermist and had it mounted above the
mantle piece ?

Suffering animals of whatever specie, deserve to released from life, if no hope remains of recovery, Cows, particularly when the Magpies are in competition to win an eyball, another situation was the two R.S.P.C.A peeps were crawling all over one of my farmers, him unable to get a quick response from the usual chaps that roll up with the gear & truck, my insurance covered me at the time, but FLO's staff had omitted the wording on ticket, so a phone call was answered with "Get on with it".

I think my ticket covers me for estate management and something about preventing suffering , I'll have to check wording when I get home tonight

Unbelievable! The fact that your neighbour, and whoever else is involved, can't shift a few cattle is shocking, how did he plan to sell them / send them off for slaughter. Have you tried leaving feed out to atract them to a part of the wood where they can be driven back on to his ground?

Have you thought what these are worth each, beef steers thick end of £800 plus.

+1

Typically cattle have a 'come to' food so to move mine I would rattle a feed bucket full of sugar beet and one or two would come running. Being a herd animal several more would rush to join them in order to keep together and enjoy their favourite food. Any stragglers are just called by the herd and join up fairly quickly. It's a ten minute job.
No need for a Gun just grab a Feed Bucket.
