Letzter Bissen-Last Bite

Thank you very much Andreas. As the orginal poster of this thread, I was hoping that I would get a good response and I am more than pleased with your very interesting post.
I for one would like to hear more of these traditions as well as your personal stalking expoilts. I'm also interested in knowing more of the German Language in respect of traditional hunting. I've studied some old Anglo Saxon Languages and I'm interested in the obvious similarities.

For a start, what is meant by 'Waidmannsheil'!

Thanks again Andreas

Thank you for the flowers...

There are many terms regarding hunting traditions - we even have our own language "Jägersprache" for example:

ear of animals = not ear:
hare : Löffel
Wild boar: Teller
Fox: Gehöre
Roe: Lauscher

etc., etc. If you youse this terms, other hunters can recognize you as a "real hunter". It´s all too much to explain in this forum, but there is even a dictionary on the market!

Waidmannsheil is uesd as a greeting and as a congratulation if one has shot an animal, the answer is "Waidmannsdank". A "Waidmann is a hunter who respects the old traditions and he acts always "waidgerecht", which means that he respects the law and traditions and hunts in a fair way. I can´t translate the word "Heil" but it means the same as the latin word "vivat". A rather bad example is the nazi greeting "Heil Hitler" - but please don´t bring it in relationship with hunting...!

Sorry for my late response, but I didn´t know that this forum doesn´t have an automatically information system.

Best regards and Waidmannsheil!

Andreas

Thanks Andreas,
It all sounds a bit complicated! Although very interesting.

Blimey Andreas, did you have to mention the war! We are all friends now you know. This of course means we can all hate the French instead!! :-D :-D

Traditional hunting by Kalahari Bushmen. Most of their diet is gathered by the women who carry a digging stick as a lot of diet grows underground .The men are the hunters.Bow and poisoned arrowsThese arrows are unfletched and the point is traditionally bone but nowadays more commonly flattened very sharpened metal. This is held in place in a split in the arrow head bound in by wet sinew which on drying holds it very firmly. The poison comes from beetle grubs found underground below the beetles host tree.If these grubs have parasites the poison is more lethal. The poison mixed with plant poisons and spittle on the arrow behind the head.It is then low heat dried .Arrows are carried in a skin quiver with a lid.The bow is about 3 feet long and has a string of kudu achilles tendon. They track and stalk their animal and shoot at a maximum 30 yards. On strike go to point of impact and follow the spoor from that position. The smaller game collapse after about 20 minutes and are then taken back to camp for consumption using every part of the animal The poison is haemotoxic so the animal dies of suffocation. After preparation and eating and they can eat a surprising amount of meat at one sitting. They will then mime out the episode of the hunt.Taking the part of the hunters and the prey alternately. This is amazingly accurate to what happened. The spiritual leader will then dance himself into a trance to send the spirit if the animal to the heavens.
