Light for Wild Boar

Thank you to all i am browinsg around Surefire and Laser gentics because i need a QD system and i do not have the possibilty to Mount a QD rings system

Question for those who shot boar

Noticed few folk in various thread saying all you need is enough to see outline or shape of the boar,
Is it a case of any beast will do ? Or do folk take time to pick out make from female , young from old ?
Not nit picking , genuinely curious as to how a beast is selected etc

Paul

Ive seen a lot of set ups and id say the best so far is the archer or longbow from starlight unless you want to spend big money
I had Julian from starlight here last week giving me a night with various new kit including thermal scopes which was impressive and probably come into its own when there is no moon but if i had been able to choose one set up it would have been the longbow with the dragon fly on top .I use an archer with a fire fly , some guys struggle with clarity but if thats the case it isnt set up properly on a suitable scope . Out last night i could see and identify easily badgers , deer hares etc at 200m

Hi Paul
Personally i wouldnt take a shot on a large boar if all i could make out was an outline , with decent kit it should be possible to see if its a male or female
also it is usually fairly easy to work out the sex depending on how many are there and getting to know what the different sexes are doing at different times of year , easy to make mistakes otherwise

Cheers Colin
👏😀
No experience of boar but hoping / going to change that !

But wee bit of experience with NV albeit only digital .

I'm guessing this boat shooting in question would be 100yds n less?

If so a digi add on like wardy700 or nt300 would be ideal .

If didn't want to change day scope ...
One thing I will say about any NV
Take time to play with it , tweak focus & scope parallax .
After but of fiddling if decent IR is there all of a sudden you hit sweet spot & get clarity your looking for

I think you get what you pay for with nv mate , i had a guy last week with a digital set up who had a miss at 60m , when he checked it on returning home the doubler has come loose , it was a long drive back to Ireland for him  had a couple of misses by other guys (sd members) using similar set ups too , personally i get on well with the archer but is a wee bit costly , longbow and dragonfly is pretty awesome

i got on well with the archer :D well colins archer the thermal spotter was a massive plus though still got a grin on my face from that night mate !

Thank you to all for you seuggestions, i can't use a 1 gen NV because i have a unique rifle and in the moring i use it for deer about laser spotter I have tried to seach them on eby but I don't find anything can you link me someone(Also in pm)?
Other ideas? My starting idea was to find a big surefire a good price ad use it with a scope mount which is your opinion about this?

What scope are you using, by "unique" do you mean you have just the one rifle?

regards WB

In Poland we are not allowed to use night vision riflescopes or any light sources when shooting, but can use night vision for identification before the shot or observation. From my experience any IR illuminator can be seen by boar and because of that any digital NV doesn't work. You can get away with it sometimes in peri urban or farmland where there are various light sources and they don't mind IR illumination that much, but in the midle of a woodland you switch on the IR and they just run.... only good tubed NV that can work with no extra IR can be used without spooking pigs

depends on the IR wave lenght lots of IRs are only just of the visible red spectrum and put out a lot of visible red couple this with a Fish eye lens and an animal will spot the big glowing red eye

850 nm IR is the best for use with digital add ons still has a fair glow (lots of cheap Gen 1 stuff use 808nm )

you can use 940nm IR which you need to be pretty close to see any visible glow on the emitter but Digital is only about 1/4 as sensitive to as 850 so same power led gives a lot less usable light
that said its still plenty for most close use 40-50m etc on rabbits

Hallelujah! Long may the ban on night vision scopes in Poland continue, i'm back over there too see an old hunting pal in April, no doubt we will have a " Few wee walks of a late evening" hunting under natural light in Poland is all part of the wonderful experiance and makes for " Fair Chase" :)

We can use fixed illumination for hunting boar at night. I have a small LED spotlight that shines a green light mounted on my hunting tower. Whilst it may sound so romantic shooting boar in the snow under a full moon you would manage to do that about 3 times a year. Very few full moons give good lightwhat with cloud etc.
Poland balance their boar hunting useing many hunting forms not just sitting out on a full moon. The problem i see with NV and TI is the abuse of these high tec aids. Now i know every boar hunter is going to say they can't complete their cull and al lthe other bull**** excuse without the aid of these heaven sent aids

depends on personal POV and the reason your dropping the hammer
