Hi all,
I've recently gone back to a 1:8 twist tikka varmint .223. Now then I have 3 full tubs of H4895 sitting here doing nothing and wondered about using in the Tikka. Wanted to use a varmint bullet in the 60gr region.
What are your thoughts folks?
TIA
Andy

Hornady loading app suggests a max load of 25.1gn for a 55gn bullet.
It doesn't list that powder for 69gn bullet though
Op wants to shoot 60 grain bullets.
Me being me, I would start at 55 grain minimum load and go from there.
Ken.

4895 used to be my go-to powder for 223 and 55gr bullets (then moved to Varget). 60gr bullets should do well too.

BTW, Hodgdon does list IMR-4895 load data for 60 gr bullets, and 4895 was one of those few powders that regardless of who made it, was interchangeable (IMR or Hodgdon; or at least it was close enough to just start low and work up). So, just start with the starting load of IMR-4895, and work up. I'd think you'd run out of case capacity before you could put too much in (IMR-4895 lists 25.2 as max load and is compressed).

H4895 is an excellent powder for 223.

Hodgdon lists loads for bullets in your intended weight category as:

55gn SPR SP ........... start 25.0gn / Max 26.0gn (C) 3315 fps 49,000 CUP COAL 2.200"

60gn HDY V-Max ..start 24.0gn / Max 26.0gn (C) 3174 fps 50,100 CUP COAL 2.25"

63gn Sierra SP ....... start 23.5gn / Max 25.5gn 3078 fps 50,000 CUP COAL 2.20"

69gn Sierra MK ..... start 24.0gn / Max 26.0gn (C) 3069 fps 49,700 CUP COAL 2.235"

Winchester case, WSR primer, 24-inch barrel.

Knock max charges down a bit if using Lapua, PPU, RWS brass
