Loss of a dog

So in quick succession I’ve lost 2 dogs one a lab bitch I bred thistle (7) a kennel dog a sweet natured animal I had plans to breed with but she didn’t cut the mustard like her mother my deer dog . She became ill very quickly and after 24 hrs in the vets we were no nearer finding the problem and they wanted to operate! In my experience rolling the dice is never favourable and I called time on my sweet dog she is resting with the many dogs I’ve lost over the yrs and after loosing a son a month earlier we thought our hearts couldn’t break any further. sadly my partners little Maltese Julie (14.5) took a turn for the worse a couple of weeks later ! 😢 our house dog the boss ! A real character and got right under the rufty tufty keepers skin we called time on her we had my partners kids over and they headed to the vets who was excellent with them and she too headed to the pond on the shoot with the other dogs . We usually walk through the spot on shoot days and I say hello as we do hoping they can wag their tales in excitement of the next drive .
We were are & am heartbroken by the tragedy’s we’ve faced but as I said to my step kids we had good times the best times and we owe our dogs it’s not an easy decision but calling time to help them in the time they need us most is what we owe them I’ll never let them suffer !
Time to reflect on life the coming season on the shoot and what we’ll replace with no rush , I’ve had excellent results with rehomed labs and spaniels so we’ll see .
As for a house dog we have my sons staffy bitch a terrific dog a memory of him I see every day she house trained and not super hairy but will need a buddy maybe a mini teckel 😂
Hearts mend 💔memories are everlasting
Keep em close

Breaks me up every time but i just stopped saying never again because i indefinitely break that promise . My Boss Lab was not only a best mate and shooting partner , he actually became an assistance dog for my daughter who has severe asthma from about 5 year old ! He could and definitely did warn her up to a minute before she knew . A few years ago she came down with seizures , he picked that one straight up first time he smelt and saw it and would force her to sit down as he did during an asthma attack . Only time he didnt sit right by my side shooting was if she was there ! 11-12 year old and he went down hill after a morning mile walk which gave him no apparent bother . No big softy either tackled a fox when he was still in puppy teeth , fox got away of course pulling a milk tooth out the then pup and backed me two or three times with poachers
real sorry for the loss you experienced and think we all get it? ! been there done it , dont want to again but we will

There are probably no words any of us can offer for so much unimageable loss in a such a short time. I truly hope you can draw comfort from all the unconditional love, good moments and cherish them.
I hope that by sharing this helps you and your family deal with such losses.

We made that decision 5 weeks ago with our 1st dog one of the toughest decisions of my life but the right one I'm sure and can't image it ever gets any easier.

I know , I know I really do . I’m 69 and this has bought a tear to my eye
i Feel your pain , having gone thro that 10 months ago and if I see a dog that looks like mine it’s startes me off again
keep your chin up mate best you can

no it doesnt get easier for sure , indeed i think it gets harder. I said over 25 years ago " i wouldnt be getting another dog " , i dont bother saying that now because i know i will but seriously when actors are asked "how do you cry for filming purposes ?" most say "i think about a dog i loved and lost" these events can be decades earlier

Cheers lads
Lucky to have the love of a good lady and good friends for support
We will get over this time it just takes time 🕰️ it will get easier but we will remember
I will be hopefully auctioning a charity stalk before next cwd season with the chance of other species just got to run things past the various land owners so keep an eye out for that
Cheers
Norma

Nothing worse, feel for you. My old spaniel is nearing the end (14.5 still runs round like a puppy) and like you I’ll do the righ thing when the time is right.

Went through similar last year, Lost 2 dogs weeks apart, 15yr old WhippetxBeddy and 13yr old Shitzu, The 15yr old passed away the same day as Mam passed, it was heartbreaking, I said that was it no more dogs, That didn't last long, we picked this little girl up last week.

A short update
Well we went down a different route
My better half got a cocker now 10 months old a little bitch a pocket rocket in training and doing very well . We also pick up this weekend a lab bitch a red to slowly learn her trade on the shoot and out stalking my current bitches range from 9 and two 11 year olds fit but geriatric like me .
My son’s inquest took place also this week 14 months on and the coroner found systemic failures in his care with the two Trusts involved. We had to endure the period of time he was ill all over again but it was worth every second to have our voice heard in court .
We move on much stronger after this process .
As a footnote my understanding of having a family member with a mental illness is not expert by any means but I feel we are in a position to help someone in a similar situation and hope a similar tragedy could be avoided. Should anyone like to chat about mental health within the family please reach out
Kindest regards
Norma

His and my love of the countryside kept us both going his with camera and rod mine with gun and rod
The countryside and all its wonders never ceased to fill his cup when it is less than half full .he was at his very best when outside in gods green earth the sooner people realise how important it is to countryside people and leave it’s management to us the better .
Thankyou for your thoughtful comment

It's hard to know what to say fella
You've been through a lot, too much, in such a short time
But
You seem making the best that you can of a bad situation and thinking of others while doing so
Good on you and all the best as you make your way on from all of this
