Love a Woodpecker...

A few years back, I bought a commissioned piece of work from Rodger McPhail - who may just be my favourite wildlife artist.

It was of a couple of Woodpeckers, and it hangs in my lounge.

This (frosty) morning, I looked out into my back garden, and onto the bird feeder.

What I saw has rather made my day.

Do not let the poor quality of the images, detract from the utter joy this wee bird gave me.

I thought this was a post about you having a love of cheap cider from the title.

There is a woodpecker near where I work but I never get the chance to pinpoint where it is. Avery unique bird in Britain.

I'm fortunate enough to have them on the feeders outside my kitchen window all year round. I spend a fortune keeping them, and all the other wee fellows fed.

Yes, they are beautiful birds we have had a pair visit our bird feeder for a few years now. they usually have one young a year which they bring along to feed then the young one comes along on its own so we have a regular train of visitors.

Aaah woodpeckers, those beautiful, fascinating.........rotten little bastards.

We have fed them for many years as we have great respect and admiration for a bird that has the carpentry skills with which to survive a rocky mountain winter. That is until they went absolutely mad and decided to wage war on our house and barn ($$$).

This barn side took the worst of it and appears to have survived a firefight.

The only silver lining is that almost immediately the mountain bluebirds started nesting in the larger holes and are producing several broods per year in their new condo complex. We do love our bluebirds, so the repairs may have to wait another year.....or three.

I had the same on my cabin in the Woods. Funnily enough the culprit never showed when I sat in wait with my shotgun.....
