M&P 15-22 accuracy

Hi guys

I have a 15-22 and I am having some strange accuracy issues that I cant figure out. The rifle groups ok but the point of aim isnt consistent. I shoot a group at 50 yards, which is maybe an inch low and an inch to the right. I adjust the scope 2 clicks up and to the left and then its suddenly shooting 2 inches high. I finally get a group near centre and then the next group will be an inch high again.
I thought the issue was with my strike eagle 1-6, Votex replaced that scope and I upgraded to a Viper pst gen2 1-6. same issue. I tried with soundmod on and off with no change. I have checked torque setting on the rings and all are good.

I am using Vortex pro rings 2 piece.

Any help would very much appreciated.

Cheers
Gwyn

Not the same gun granted but i have a sig 522 and its quite an accurate little gun , but any inconsistancies in hold will shift the poi all over.Pressure on the magazine, upward pressure on the forend will both throw groups all over.

I am currently using CCI subs and have tried a few different brands. Shooting from prone with an Atlas bipod

Wow. That is really strange as the company that sold me the wrench to remove the barrels warned they would be tight enough warrant placing the part of the barrel behind the wrench in a barrel vise. I had to do just this in both instances. Any chance they were removed previously for, say, the cutting of a different muzzle thread?? I mean, I don't doubt you but it from my perspective it seems so odd.~Muir

Not sure. I guess the only way to know is to get the right tool and check. Someone suggested my issue could be a parallax shift due to the scope being free at 100 yards. Could it move poi that much?

POI shift due to many things

1) changes in the way rifle is held. And semi automatic tends to jump about so even more important for consistent hold. Shooting prone off a bipod will often cause lots of changes of point of impact as its very easy to have an inconsistent hold. Use you hand to hold the forend and rest that on a bag.

2) you are fighting the rifle, getting irritated and chasing the zero - see point 1.

3) something is loose. Go right the way through the whole set up from moderator to but plate. Anything that is loose and particular anything loose and subject to recoil may affect where it shoots. Loose stock bolts etc in particular.

4) basic design. I have only played with a few semi 22lr tactical type rifles. They are great fun for plinking - shooting gongs, clays etc. But if you trying to scope them you are adding a lot weight on the top of the receiver which is only held to frame by a couple of roll pins, and the barrel is screwed, and you have a breech block that is free floating and held in battery by spring pressure- given that most are simple blowbacks.

A bolt action by contrast is a solid barrel screwed in a solid reciever with a solid bolt lock up. To which solid scope mountings are bolted.

It may be that the MP5-22 is simply not going to work with a heavy scope. Go back to iron sights, or a lightweight red dot type sight if you want an optic. These do work and last time I used one of these type of semi 22lr was on the 120 odd yard range. And after working out holdovers everybody was pinging the gongs with much regularity. No, not hitting the tiny little one inch squares, but certainly giving the 5” and 10” gongs a lot to be scared about.

Thanks for your informed answer. I will check everything, try different ammo and maybe accept that its not going to be perfect. Thanks

I agree with Heym's comments.I also have the M&P 15-22 which has problems shooting accurately.I changed ammo from Winchester to CCI minimags and saw a big improvement. Also, using any sort of rest made accuracy non existant.I only shoot hand held now. It's a great rifle and fun to shoot if only for plinking or taking a few rabbits.

Sorry if this is an obvious one, but I have seen it many times before.

Have you set your scope parallax? Have you set it not just on the scale on the knob, but also by moving your head around and checking it? Is your head position consistent between groups?

Tight groups, but with different locations on the target between groups, usually indicates user error with head and cheek weld position.

I will give the mini mags a go for hunting. Thanks

Hi there. Its a 1-6 so no parallax adjustment. Its free at 100 yards.
