Magazine Insertimg Too Far in Action

Just had a look at a Remmy long action. The 3.715 magazine falls into the action. The 3.85" Cip Mag can be caught by the front action bottom and possibly rear. To replicate the issue of the magazine going in too far I made a mock-up with my old Atlasworx from my 300wm and a remmy long action using my old 3.715 Accurate magazine. The way it was setup exactly the same happens, magazine pushes into the action and the bolt will catch it. I tried lowering the rear by 3mm washer which was enough to avoid the bolt catching. Even if the magazine was pushed up but I do not know if a new mag release lever would be long enough to get the magazine to feed reliably. One might need to compromise. So far nobody was really bothered about that.

I don't think we bedded that rifle or can't remember. Was that rifle in Ireland? We can only bed T3 stocks with a slave action.
One point, Atlasworx deliberately manufactures their bottom metals with the release catch a bit too long. Just in case the floorplate is fitted a bit far out.
We mostly remove around 0.8-1.5mm from the release lever.
Long action AICS in Rem 700 clones can be a bit loose. Meaning the magazine can be pushed too high and cause issues. Not all magazines have the same catch ramp and size. Maybe bedding the mag system lower could help in your case and leaving the mag catch as is. This might stop the magazine from being able to go too high. One reason for this is that the single row long action aics mags are very narrow and depending on the action the mag might not rest against any part of the action when up. One could test this by adding shims under the mag system to lower it. Just be careful not to strip threads when the action screws only grab a few threads. Spare levers can be obtained just in case needed. I don't think the "5 mm or so" can be reached though.
In my 300wm's the mag would also go slightly too high when the bolt was open. I left the bolt closed when inserting the magazine. Or pulled the magazine down before feeding. Not ideal but did not bother me. Not sure if it would be better with the longer CIP magazine (3.85") but that needs the CIP mag system. We don't have an Atlas Action with us to try replicate.

Hi Edi,

Yes I think that rifle was with ye guys. Dom built it for me. I am nearly certain it was sent to PSE for the barrelled action to be bedded, i may stand corrected on that.

I wonder if I change the bottom metal for another type/brand, would i still have the same issue? It's not a massive problem and yes, if the bolt is closed when the magazine is inserted one can cycle a round.
Or, if the bolt is open, I just insert the magazine and then pull it down until it catches, and it'll cycle perfectly.

Kind regards,
Dave.

Depending on geometry, you might consider attaching (gluing?) something on the external sides of the mag to stop it at correct height?

Dave, Dom sent us a few rifles to bed etc. It could be in that case.
Could you get the rifle to us and we could have a look if something can be done or improved. I am thinking down the lines of lowering the mag system somewhat and replacing the lever with a longer one.
Maybe sometime in March/April?
