Magtech Primers

I’m collecting 1K SR from Henry K tomorrow, along with Vhit. powder and bullets.
Not paying £113 when I can manage with £73.
Ken.

Probably into 15-20,000 rounds made with them
Issue rate is not significantly different to any other primer
very very small

people get too hung up on primers
of all your consumables it is the least likely to cause any issues or present problems developing an accurate stalking load

Collected my 1K Magtechs this morning and primed 80 Hornady 222 and 20 Sako cases.
All factory ammo once fired by me.
The primer went into the Sako case quite easily…. They went into the Hornady cases like I could have put them in without the use of a tool they are that slack a fit!
I’ve never reloaded Hornady Superformance cases before, do they become loose on their one factory firing?
When priming PPU cases some weeks ago I remember the primers were always very hard to insert.
Opinions anyone?
Thanks, Ken.
Ps. Smelly dog,
Have you tried priming any Hornady cases?

Not loaded any Hornady in my 222, but I do for my 204, and primers are a snug fit up to 4x fired. But that's as many as I've had to use them at the moment. I've a cracking 32g load with it, but I don't cry if Hornady brass is lost in the grass, unlike Norma, Lapua or even Sako. 204 is the only cartridge I use Hornady brass for; it seems crap in bigger cartridges. It's not as bad as Winchester, though.

Sorry, I've just checked. These are Remy 7 1/2 primers. I use the Magtech small pistol primers in the 22 Hornet, no problems so far.

No experience of Hornady 222 brass, but the word 'Superformance' tells you the story. All examples of this grade are loaded to SAAMI absolute max pressures for the cartridge using blended high-energy powders. Given that Hornady brass isn't that great to start with ............... !

Having said that, the 222 is a relatively low-pressure cartridge, so even loaded right up this is a little surprising. I've used Magtech (SR and LR) for years, and both sizes are snug in Lapua and Norma brass IME.

Laurie,
These are the only Superformance cartridges I’ve ever fired and I didn’t / don’t believe the velocity figures claimed on the box.
I will shoot a few past the chronograph on Thursday to check. I’ll be surprised if they match the figures on the box.
I’ve just primed 5 x 221 Fb. cases and the pressure needed to set the primers in those is more in line with what I’m used to feeling.
So it looks like the Hornady brass has worn itself out in 2 firings as I definitely won’t load these again.
19 grains of Vhit. N120 x 52 grain bullet, so a conservative load.
Thanks for your input.
Ken.

I've found they are tight in fired hornady and s and b brass in my 6.5 .
Also tight in 243 federal and 30 06 federal

Hi Gary,
Is that brass virgin brass or fired factory cases and if factory were they Superformance rounds?
Thank, Ken.

I have never used Magtech primers, but have had a few, perhaps 5 in 4000, Muroms that needed a second strike. It was suggested that, as Muroms are a tight fit, they were not seated deep enough and this was rectified by the first strike in each case.

Hi,
I fired 10 rounds (50 grain x 222) past the chronograph today.
Hornady box claims 3345.
Minimum today: 3088.
Max: 3158.8.
Ave: 3128.5.
Hornady probably use a minimum 24” and poss. longer test barrel.
My barrel is 20”.
So, allowing for shorter barrel possibly less than 100 fps real time to box time.
Ken.

Hornady say they do achieve this increase in speed without increasing chamber pressure!
Sound imposs.
Ken.

I know Magtech do not use lead in their primers, I shot a lot of their 9mm Luger without any problems. Not used them for rifle primers though.
