Making a new wooden butt plate

A quick post showing my way of making and fitting a wooden butt plate. I used measurements taken from another gun the customer previously had fitted.
There are many ways of doing it, this is just my preferred method.

Firstly, the existing butt plate is removed. A piece of walnut with a similar grain pattern is roughed out and planed flat on one face. The locator lugs are then glued into place and fine tuned to a snug fit.
Gluing the lugs in place saves so much time as well as material and makes it much easier to fit to the gun.

The next step is to the trace around the stock and cut out the plate. Once on the gun, the plate is filed and sanded to match the profile of the stock.
Extreme care must be taken when sanding to ensure that no wood is removed from the stock. (this ensures the existing wood and synthetic pads still fit).

Work on the back can now begin. Layout lines for the checkering are drawn, then cut with a single line cutter. A 20lpi (lines per inch) cutter is used to cut out the middle.
Once cut, a small triangular file is used to angle the cuts. This creates a small point on each diamond.
The plate is then finished with oil and blended back into the stock.

I hope people find this useful. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.
